Mysterious Username?

So a few months ago I wanted the username "pud". I was relying on sites saying that it was available etc... and had waited DAYS for it to become available.
I usually looked on 3name.xyz which I didn't know was outdated and displayed it as available ( Screenshot AT THE TIME: http://prntscr.com/ev3i68 ) (https://3name.xyz/search.php?name=pud)
but namemc.com also said it was available 1 day before I was going to change my username.
Then on the day that I could change my username to FINALLY a three-lettered word that nobody else has, mojang.net said it was taken.
I checked on namemc.com again and it was now displaying this (https://namemc.com/name/pud).
Many other sites still said it was available when it was obviously not if the mojang site itself said it wasn't. (Iaero.me says this http://prntscr.com/ev3k71) (MCSniper says this http://prntscr.com/ev3lh4) (Minecraftnames says this http://prntscr.com/ev3n2a)
Most said that it wasn't available but didn't offer any profiles with the person who had taken the username. (http://prntscr.com/ev3j1e)
Which leads me to the questions: What the hell is going on? Why do some sites say its available and some sites it doesn't? If it isn't available who took it? And why are some websites acting funny when searching the username? (http://prntscr.com/ev3kvk)

Mojang is the only site that knows for certain. Other sites have different means of detecting how people come online and with what username, and those means are sometimes not reliable. Compare it to the way servers are identified as being online or not - only the server can tell you yes or no. Sites ping, and those pings are done either every 10 minutes, every 5 minutes, every day, etc. or simply not done well or at all. Some sites bug out and mislabel a server as being online. The only place that gives you the true answer is the source; expect disappointment relying on anything else.
