Crafting:
Now there are three things that you want to try to craft before night falls to make the time pass much quicker.

1. A Pick
This is MINE craft after all.
2. A Door
You can't just let anyone into your house now can you?
3. A Bed
You need you character to sleep, even if you are going to stay up all night
playing.

Step one: Gather more wood and create more planks

Step two: Create some sticks by putting one plank above the other in your inventory crafting space.
To separate a single plank from the stack right click instead of left clicking when you go to place it in your crafting space. (Note that right clicking on a stack of an item will half of the indicated number of that stack.)
Now take your sticks by left left clicking on the image to the right of your crafting space once.

Step Three: Find 3 wool (Color doesn't matter)
Since you don't have the materials for shears just yet you'll have to punch the sheep to get it's wool. (Note that a single sheep may not yield enough wool you may have to find more than one sheep in this case.)

Step Four: Craft!
In most cases you'll need to know how to craft something. (I'm going to show you the recipes for these three items but if you want to know more of the recipes you can go to:http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Crafting for all the current versions recipes.)
To start crafting simply right click on the crafting bench and follow these recipes:

-Pick:

(Note that you will only need ONE wooden pickax! It is a starting pick which will make gathering stone for the basic pick much, much more easy, and most wooden picks just end up taking up space in ones inventory after they are used for this.)

-Door:

-Bed:

Step 4: Sleep or mine?
Now that your home is established you can either choose to rest in it (assuming your house is properly lit) or stay up for the night and mine, and hopefully find some coal for torches, one of the most commonly used items in the game.
Note that if you are quick enough making a pick and going digging for coal is the best option, if you attempt to sleep in a bed set in a poorly lit house you'll find yourself waking up next to a hostile mob, and I doubt anyone wants that.

Part two: Mining

Listed in the first chapter, you'll need a pick.
You could either make a little mine shaft (which is a hole of any size in the ground) or you could look for a cave. Bring torches! If you go through a cave in the dark, enemies will spawn and try to kill you!

A cave would be recommended because you could find ores much easier.
Now, you have mined stone to get cobblestone. With cobblestone, you can create Stone Tools! Instead of using wooden tools. Stone Tools have more durability and it takes shorter to mine materials.

Now that you have Stone Tools, you can finally get, Iron Ore! Iron is not to common, nor is it rare. Most players prefer using Iron Tools because it is better than Stone and it's more common than diamond. To use iron, you have a smelt it. That's where the furnace comes in! A furnace is created by going into the workbench menu. And putting cobblestone on every block, except the middle block. With a furnace, you put coal in the bottom input, put Iron Ore in the top input, and then, the iron ore turns into Iron ingots! You use the iron ingots to create an iron pick. With an iron pick, you can mine diamond, gold and lapis luzuli. Have a happy time mining!

I think building a house should come before craft mate. After all safety is top priority. Each days night should probably have a different section if I'm not being too picky that is.
