I have had a virus before on my computer.... This virus was no normal virus it was WIPING my files. I was like really mad because pretty much AVG was just laughing at it and not giving a dam. So i just thought stuff this i turned off my computer and put the Windows 7 Disk in and just reset my computer. But i have a new computer now! :) AlienWare it has Norton360 wich is better then AVG but i use both for the extra protection.

BTW: AlienWare is so expensive! My computer cost $8,000

I reccomend the following AntiVirus and AntiMalware programs:

Avast!
Malwarebytes
AVG

They keep my computer safe ... Haven't had a virus for about 2 years.

Avast isn't the best :/
It didn't pick up a virus once, and when I got another antivirus program and scanned my computer it picked it up right away :/

Mind you, it's important to point out that it's ultimately the user who decides to install viruses on his own machine. Viruses don't propagate themselves - they require user interaction. Today isn't as bad as the day of IE6 where ActiveX exploits were everywhere; nearly all of the web is now sandboxed.

Installing anti-virus programs won't protect you fully. You still have to educate yourself.

Also @ jgsampso; different antiviruses have different virus dictionaries. It is completely possible for one to miss something when others don't. TotalVirus is a very good example of this; you can upload a file to it, and it scans it with ~30 different programs. Most of the time, only the top 6 or so will find anything.
