The first thing you're going to want to do is intall "modloader" and "optifine".

After you've installed these, you'll be able to use HD texture packs and install other mods to your hearts content. You've asked for a recommendation on the best mods. I'll recommend you a mini-map mod and single player commands.

Actually you could just use MCPatcher, but Optifine is better unless you're trying to use a mod with a Sky Dimension or CCTV mod.

You could indeed use MCPatcher, but from my personal experience I've found that Optifine does the same job, only better.
