"Smelting" System for Forum Likes

Hi everyone! I had an idea for the Planet Minecraft forums. In the time I have been on the forums, I have seen lots of people replying to posts with things like "+1" or "This is the reason we should be able to diamond forum posts!" etc. I had an idea for a Minecraft - related liking system. Basically, when you make a post, in the upper right hand corner, there is an iron ore, with a number on it. That number represents how many people have clicked it. If you click it, it adds one number, like a +1, and the iron ore changes to an ingot on your screen. Underneath where it goes like:

The ingots could be how many "likes' that user had received in total. It would not give EXP.
That's about it! What's your opinion on this idea?
EDIT: A few people are saying it should give EXP. I don't think it should give EXP. I think it should give you ranks on the forums, similar to when you post more on the Minecraft Forums. Say you have no ingots, it might say under your name "newly spawned" as opposed to 300 ingots might say "diamond miner"

PhaseThis seems like a very interesting idea, there are tons of sites that do this already, including the Minecraft Forums, and it genuinely shows how active you are in the community, and how your posts help it. I especially love the ingot idea, gold might be more appealing to the younger audience that is on this site, cause shiny n' stuff. XP is a definite no, Cyprezz, Paril, and every other staff member has said enough about how XP is made for uploads, not forums. We could have a different rank on the forums than we do on the site? That'd be neat, but'd require a lot more time to create a whole new class system. Or just steal MF's, cause plagiarism n' stuff. You'd have to pull off the Ore switching to the Ingot good, or people would end up hating it in a matter of weeks, a little particle effect would be nice, like the fire smoke that is ingame. I'm very interested to see where this leads.
Uhhh... Nonono, gold would appeal to younger audiences... and cause something like this:
"Nice idea, have a gold ingot! "
"LOLNO NOOB, IT'S BUDDER"
So maybe not gold :L

That's a cool idea and all, but what about people with a lot of forum posts? The new system is added, and then they have 1000 or more posts... with zero ingots. I don't know how it could be solved... I'm just pointing out the issue to see if someone else happens to have a solution

This is a fantastic idea. I'm very active when it comes to the forums, but it is difficult to sustainably upload new content as a server owner.

I `m not very sure. Some threads will get tons of ingots, others will probably get none. Forums is forums, but it`ll be useful if we get xp. More people will hang around the forums.

Upvotes on the forums will not give experience initially. They will be visible on your profile and will serve as another way for users to tell if a user is reputable or not. Once we nail down how the forums are using emeralds, we will have a better grasp on whether or not (or how) experience should be awarded for it.
As for other ores: no idea yet. Emeralds/Charcoal is just our WIP icons that I picked for no particular reason. I heard here first of the idea of "smelting" (ore block which clicking turns it to the ingot) and I think I might steal this idea.

Wow, from what Paril said, I think that in the new forums there will be +1s and -1s. Would be cool if gave/removed you experience though

I don't think they should remove EXP, because say they get more dislikes then likes, it starts to take XP off of what they earned from the site.

The forums are entirely WIP; right now, we use an Emerald/Coal system for Up/Down, and yes, downvote does exist, but I'm tempted to just replace it with an upvote-only system. I have some ideas for how we can still allow a downvote to exist even without the button.

Ok, diamonds are used. So emeralds and coal will be used too. What about the other ores? Where do you think you'll use them?

So like what the old site was, where you could up and down things? I think it should be just up vote, honestly. Or if there is a dislike thing, it shouldn't take away EXP.

Like certain numbers give you fertain XP? I was thinking forum badges with iron tools, blocks, armor, etc. or forum ranks, but that does sound cool!

Stick with XP, it just makes levelling up more difficult, and trust me I've had to do good content to get to where I am

I agree. I think it'd be a cool feature even if it didn't give XP. It'd partially show new members who to trust on the forums.
That's why I suggested it To judge someone on the forums really feels like you have to watch them and learn yourself. Someone could have 2000 forum posts and you might think that makes them someone to look up at, but if they only have a few ingots then you know they might not be posting great things.

No exp. I don't see why you'd get exp from forums, when you're not contributing to the site other than something such as a poll for yourself, or a skinning contest .

Edit: The only setback of this feature would be the posts/ingots ratio for members like me, who have been on the site for years, and already have 1000+ posts. And I think the forums would turn into a call of duty-like place, where everyone judges you on your posts/ingots ratio (like people judge you on k/d ratio in cod).
