Starting my own Public Server?

Are you new to setting up a server and need a bit of pointing in the right direction? This is the place to be.

Hello everyone!

I have been playing on great PvP server for some time now, and I think it would be the coolest thing in the world to open my own PvP server in the future.

I know the costs behind operating a server can be high, but I am not worried about that right now. What I am currently focused on is becoming familiar with what programs and utilities are necessary for starting, operating, and maintaining a high-traffic multiplayer Minecraft server.

I have looked into websites like Bukkit and programs like McForge but am rather unsure of what is actually necessary for running a server.

If anyone could simply explain the purpose of McForge and what other programs/utilities might be important in running a server, it would be very helpful.

Thanks!

well mcforge is software for hosting your ownserver but i suggest you rent your server from a site like mycraftbox.com unless you have very good internet and a high performance computer...

Thanks for your response! I have another question: Would anyone happen to know how much RAM would be required for a server to efficiently run a world with 50 to 100 people logged in at once? The site (minecraftbox.com) has many options ranging from 256 MB to 3 GB.

Thanks!

That makes sense, but I am on a budget and the more RAM you select, the bigger the cost. So, could anyone calculate the minimum amount of RAM that would be necessary for a high-traffic server to run effectively without lag?

Thanks!

well the sites all have estimates if your using 10 plugins then i would suggest around 1gbs of ram for 10 people for lag-free

So, to support 50 people I would need around 7 GBs of RAM? Daaaaaannnnng! If I were to rent a server that'd be around $1800 a year. That's pretty hefty.

Looks like I may have to wait a bit longer than I expected before I can start my own PvP server.

Thanks for the help everyone!

I actually did some more research and found a cheaper and better reviewed hosting website called www.zsuperhost.com . They seem to be cheaper and have a better layout when it comes to Minecraft server hosting.

Also, I understand donations can help completely pay for the cost of renting a server, the problem is getting your server off the ground.

Thanks for your help guys! I have learned a lot but still need some help with a few fairly basic issues. One of these issues has been bugging me a lot: How do you install plug-ins?

Thanks!
