The new 3d models are being ignored in my opinion
I know it's a relatively new feature but there's only like three or four resource packs with the 3d models, and most of them are for the specific texture pack.

Extract the folder and click on the Model Creator.jar That's the actual program... the other .jars I believe are some kind of compatibility things...
I would suggest looking at the forum thread there for the tutorials that are available... It looks like it's not too bad to work with.

My problem is I would completely and utterly love to do this but I have no idea how currently and I suspect most people are not entirely sure either. Plus people might not know about it.

Can someone catch me up to speed here? Can we create different models for mobs/blocks now? :S

Perhaps we need some sort of editor.. maybe it should be embedded inside of a popular unofficial Minecraft community. It would be kinda cool if it used the Items system that we built and tested Banners on. Who knows what the future holds for us, though? I certainly don't.

I don't know why, but I'm suspecting something based on this.

I personally use them a lot in my Minecraft skins, and most people probably don't use them yet because programs like MCSkin3D aren't updated yet, I'm sure they will be used more commonly in the future.

let me just clear up that MCSkin3D has been updated and it is just the new 1.8 skin format, however I was talking about the block models

Give it time, a lot of creative use can and will come out of this. I know for sure that with optifine/mcpatcher textures can be binded via item metadata. Which pretty much translates to: Adding a new block that doesn't need a mod. (Except for server side plugins/mods to do stuff regarding the block though.)
