My goal was not to start an argument about operating systems with you, nor imo, is this the appropriate place to do so. I was simply, trying to provide the OP with useful information regarding his pc buying decision.
@OP
You are probably going to have to spend near the top of that budget to get a laptop designed for gaming. If you havent already, i encourage you to consider purchasing a desktop if you are serious about gaming.
If you are looking at computers keep in mind that you will want somthing with a dedicated gpu. If it says graphics by intel (ie intel HD graphics 3000) then that is called intergrated graphics, which is built on your cpu and is not powerful enough for most games.

I'm assuming
A. You don't Game
or
B. You don't have Linux/Ubuntu
Many games, especially indie games, are not compatible with Ubuntu and thus, Windows is the best choice.

Laptops are not for gaming. You can build an extremely nice PC for $700. Also don't use Windows for gaming use Ubuntu http://www.planetminecraft.com/blog/usi ... or-gaming/

To say laptops are not for gaming is a bit of a stretch, while most are not designed for it some can be okay if you are willing to pay the price. Is a desktop going to giving you more performance per dollar? Yes. However, Ubuntu on the other hand, is not a good choice for gaming, especially when you are buying a laptop that will probably come with windows.
