Your thoughts on 15w41b
With the snapshots have come many a feature. For the people who dislike the combat change, I think you know have something else to be worried about. The boats. If you don't know, in the new snapshot 15w41b the boats have been overhauled and changed completely.
From my testing here is what I can tell you:
- Lilypads no longer break boats
- Rowing! Didn't you just hate the quick and easy method of hoping in a boat, holding down W and turning with your mouse? Neither did I! But now with rowing the controls are inverted and to go forward you must go back and forth between the A and D key. Fun! (If you can't tell I'm being 100% sarcastic here, however the change is the truth)
- Wings! Well, not in the way you may think. With this brand new pair of wings you no longer take orders from gravity! If you jump off a structure that is atleast 4 blocks high you will notice a gliding effect. The higher you fall or jump from, the more energy to the gliding. In my opinion this could be a great edition to combat wherein you could swoop down upon your enemies!
Tell me what you think of the update, and how you think it effects overall gameplay! ^^

but other mobs seem to be able to travel in boats, idk if that was already a thing but you can now take things for rides in boats
the flying wings are more poopy that i thought they would be
about the wings
only found after you kill the dragon
only give you 7 mins airtime before you have to repair them (unbreaking enchantment does work)
don't even let you fly, they are a worse version of the hang glider from openblocks
pain to control

I would like to note that I had stated from what I had tested, but thank you for bringing to my attention that you can press both at the same time. I also would like to disagree that minecraft is about creativity and not fighting because 1. It is anything you want it to be and 2. early versions of minecraft were updated specifically to bring in fighting and survival.

I like the rowing feature, but it needs improved.
- Boats should go without rowing, but considerably slow
- Boats should go faster than a normal boat would when rowing, and makes it easier to handle (control)

The oar / rowing feature has actually been in Minecraft PE for a while now, and it works pretty well.
Plus, immersion.
Also, you can just hold A and D together to go forward, you don't have to alternate between the two.

Yeah, its very clear Dinnerbone doesn't know what hes doing. The elytra is incredibly pointless to, don't be lazy. If you are stuck somewhere like on a mountain, just dig down the side of it or pour water down the side. Also the combat, ew. Just... ew.
That's all I have to say.

I don't like it. Minecraft is about creativity not fighting.

Oh WOW! Thank you, someone else realizes this!

Its about both. You cant base Minecraft on only one thing. Thats like saying theres only one type of server.

The rowing boats were downgraded . And also the golden apples. I really don't like the combat update that much. The wings look cool and really a nice addition. The one thing that I look forward to the most in 1.9 is 3d entities in texture packs, meaning 3d armor. The combat update and dual wielding just complicates the original, clean minecraft feeling.

Elytra and the "Passengers" tag are pretty cool. The new boats are not (mostly because they seem slower than they used to be; the controls don't seem like they'll be super hard to get used to).
1
Is the passenger tag for riding boats?
1
Well, yeah. So there is one thing I like about the boats, but I think that's all.
1
Not just mapmakers.
1
I know, but especially for them. Adds a lot we wished for.
1
I love the new update and 1.9 in general.
1
Agreed, it's totally awesome for mapmakers
1
great, so the boat is still the same heap of garbage crashing into water blocks, becoming unsteerable on changing currents and handling like an odd minecraft entity in general, but rejoice, you now have to hold 2 buttons, neither of which is forward, instead of the one forward button in order to go forward!
1
if you hold 'A' and 'D' the boat automatically rows forwards.
1
and it moves in the direction of the pointer, right? Well, that'll mean people will have to deal with a slight change in steering mechanics, but not much really.
And the mapmaking potential of the wings is great enough to negate it anyway.

I feel like it would be great if they changed the rowing to no longer be the only way in 1.9 to move boats.
Instead, they could make it speed up a lot (boats have normal speed otherwise) if you're rowing, and make it possible to go against a current (slight slopes of water).
That would solve the problem and still make oars attractive.

The wings sound cool, but don't they make the Feather Falling enchantment useless?
And the rowing thing sounds just as bad as the combat changes.
Although I'm totally capitalizing off the combat changes by selling Sharpness V Diamond Hoes

Wow, you are quick. Like 3 hours ago the snapshot wasn't released yet.
Anyways, just ahd a look at them myselfe.
I fin it pretty cool that tehre are different types of boats now, and the rowing looks pretty smooth and beautyful overall. But I agree that it was nice to just hold W, even the rowing is kind off fun and makes it more realistic.
The Wings (called Elytra) look absolutely fantastic! I made those wings with command blocks, and so it will be pretty sweet to replace them by actual wings in one of my projects. I really love them, great idea.
The downside is, though, that it makes Minecraft more and more a type of RPG (which I like) and takes the aspects of actual Minecraft...
