Advanced Compass

- An advanced Minecraft compass that will find a specified block in a specified range and create a colored compass needle pointing you to the closest block in that range. -

.
About:
Have you ever been deep underground and have been mining and mining for a long time and no diamonds? Well Advanced Compass to the rescue. Just install this mod, make a few configuration changes, create a standard compass in Minecraft, and you are good to go. You can track multiple blocks such as diamond, gold, chests, and mob spawners all at the same time. Advanced Compass, unlike some other compass mods is compatible with the most popular HD texture mods available such as MCPatcher and Optifine.
.

Installation is quick and simple: just add this to your minecraft.jar the same way as any other mod after you have installed your HD texture mod. Configuration is simple as well: run Minecraft once to generate the default advanced_compass.cfg file. Open it with any simple text editor (such as Notepad) and read the additional information there.
.
A special note about SMP (multiplayer) and Advanced Compass. While Advanced Compass will work in any SMP server this could be considered cheating. It can also be detected in the same way as any X-Ray mod or clear texture pack. There is no special way that any of these client side mods are detected by the server but you are given away by how fast you accumulate diamonds, or any blocks that the server wants to track. Please contact your server admins for help on determining if this mod is allowed on your particular SMP server.
.
Advanced Compass was originally written due to of the lack of Optifine support in the Finder Compass mod originally released by AtomicStryker on the minecraftforum.com site. You can find his version
HERE..
Inspiration for Advanced Compass goes to AtomicStryker for Finder Compass which was derived from Yoda12999s Enhanced Compass mod which was taken over from epinulls Enhanced Compass originally. They each suffer from the need for MCPatcher to work.

.
Current Releases:
version: 20111012

None. You can install this mod without any other mods installed. There is compatibility with Optifine and MCPatcher included. (See below for more) The most important thing to remember is to install this mod after you have installed either Optifine or MCPatcher.

.
How to report bugs and request features:
If you find a bug or would like to request a feature please visit the project tracker page HERE and click the "Create issue" button in the upper left.

.
Quick Install:
  • read the Readme in the following post
  • choose the only one of the links appropriate to your Minecraft setup
  • if you do not have any HD texture mods installed: *use the advanced_compass_x.x.x_[VERSION]_default.zip
  • if you have Optifine installed: use the advanced_compass_x.x.x_[VERSION]_optifine.zip
  • ...and so on.
  • download the mod
  • extract the zip to any temporary folder that you want- install by injecting the mod in to the minecraft.jar as with any standard Minecraft mod.- remember that you need to install Advanced Compass after you install any HD texture mod.

...or more importantly, > any < block that you choose to track. Could be a monster spawner, a chest, a block of dirt (don't do this really!), any block with an ID. ( <-- any block )

Where does one find the recipe for this item? I am using Recipe Book but I do not see it listed. Can the default version work if installed after MCpatcher has updated the HD system?

No recipe needed other than making the standard Minecraft compass. Read the generated configuration file for how to set up the default compass to include additional needles.

The default Minecraft compass is:
I = Iron Ingots
R = Redstone Dust
x = empty

x I x
I R I
x I x

yes and yes. A quote from the about section above:

Need details about what you don't understand.

Basically you just get the ID of the block you want to track and add a line in the config file in the specified format. I thought that I went overboard on the instructions provided with the default configuration file so that there would be little to no problems getting multiple tracking needles active.

Nope, Read the description. The only point of making this mod was to allow the choice as to whether to use a HD texture patcher or not. You can use MCPatcher, Optifine, or no mods at all other than this one :)

This mod will point to any block at any specific level.... read the readme and generated configuration file to set it up to be specific.

Not a copy since Finder Compass will ONLY work if you have MCPatcher installed. I liked AtomicStrykers mod and I asked him to remove the dependency. He said that he would not and that I was free to develop and release my own version. Mine is not a copy of his since I have written mine from the ground up with some internal changes. You will see some similarities in how the configuration file works. There is also some method similarities but this is unavoidable due to how the scanning works.

My mod has a few other improvements over his as well but they are not a deal breaker. It was always about his mod needing MCPatcher in order to run. I wanted to run Optifine, as most people do, and having both MCPatcher and Optifine installed at the same time disables some major fixes in Optifine.

Conversely, I also removed the need to have ANY other mod installed. You can have just this mod and none other.

So a copy? nope. Inspired by.... yup.

Plus... the last two paragraphs of my submission give full credit to this mods predecessors. If you go as far to say that my mod is a copy of Finder Compass you must also include that Finder Compass is a direct code descendant of Enhanced Compass.

...or any block that you set it to look for. Read the included readme for some examples as to how to set it up. You can search for chests at certain level (abandoned mineshaft) or it can search for mob spawners. Anything that has a blockID.
