Wow, did you do this with a mod maker, I use Eclipse to make mods :P, It's better, you can do lots of stuff with it and very fun to code

it should be two diagnolan instead of vertical planks, so you can still make sticks. I actually had the same idea, but with my idea you had to craft the parts beforehand in a crafting table, then puit them together when you need them.
