UPDATE Oct. 28 2011
Thanks to member iarp, who found a schematic of this trap, the world save and schematic are back and slightly updated. I added some more modern features to the trap and took a few spawn floors out. It's a little smaller but hopefully the tweeks I made will make up for it. For the world save, I planted the trap in my Laboratory. Enjoy!

update Sept 28, 2011

I lost the World Save to this. Sry :/
BEHEMOTH 3
12000 items/hr w/ string

A much smaller and more refined mob trap than the previous BEHEMOTH mob trap. Number 3 doesn't exactly present any innovations, just refinements in design. Weighing at 1/4 the size of BEHEMOTH and, although much taller than Lil' Behemoth, #3 is smaller in diameter. You may be able to replicate these numbers in a normal Minecraft environment but, at this point my traps are strictly about the numbers, and seeing what Minecraft can do. This is why the trap is located in a huge box carved down to bedrock, to isolate spawning to within the tower. The glass plays into this as well, as no mob can spawn on glass.

FYI, in 1.0 this not only drops a much less impressive number of items, but items fall out of the grinder and onto random places on the ground all around the thing... =/

Yeah, the only one of my traps I've updated to 1.0 standards is The Orb v2. Time, I always need more of it. Hopefully I'll get this updated soon :)

Well I don't have the world save, but I do have the schematic. I am finding that it isn't producing spawns like it used to, I tested this when it was first released and it's item/hr was about on spot, but there has been some kind of change to Minecraft and now it's a lot lower. I just let it run for 2 hours and there wasn't much spawned. Either way, here's the plans: http://www.mediafire.com/file/2zv4lrfpx6vanfp/behemoth-3-by-ml32_22182_schematic.schematic

sry for the late reply, I've been out of town. I believe it's 33 blocks wide but, It's been a while since I was on this map.

thx, ive already built one, but its more residential than this :/ i have 3 mob floors, then a mush then a reed, then a wheat, then i have a 2 story penthouse. i will have a ring that has a tree farm in it. basically a farm of all types based on this design

I love this one a ton. Trying to recreate it underground in my world. This may be extremely noobish, but I can't seem to make the inward flowing channels. Is there a video or instructions somewhere for that piece?

Not noobish at all. I guess Mojang saw those inward currents as a glitch in the water physics and patched it in beta 1.6 so, youll have to figure out a workaround for it. Either 5 block wide channels or 3-block wide channels with the water sources place one block wider on each side.

How did you thwart spiders?   They are the #1 problem I have in my mob grinder.  Mine's nowhere near as enormous as yours...only four stories of spawn floors, one channel floor, and then a kill/collection floor.  It works great for everything except skeletons, who just crawl all over everything and never get caught by the water channels.

Take a look at image 4/11. I put a cactus under my lava blades for the spiders. As for the skellys, without seeing your spawning floors, I'd assume you're giving them too much room to wander around. Try and design your floors around your channels so they spawn and don't have much choice but to wander right in.

Heh in that last sentence I meant spiders, for some reason typed skeletons.   My bad.  I have no problem with skeletons.   And yeah last night I was talking to a friend who built a mob grinder, and he also suggested the cactus solution.   This is the mob grinder I built, block for block.  As I said above, I built it with four spawning floors.

Im thinking of building this in the worldguard area I have on a particular roleplay/pvp server I play, particularly because of its small size (Worldguard extends from bedrock to sky limit), the server usually has between 5 and 30 players on, so I know I can't expect 12000 an hour, but does anyone have an approximate number I could expect?

Also, how scalable in width is it, I have 128 height to put it in, but if I find myself with say a 64 by 64 area, which is almost double the Behemoth 3's diameter (I think I counted 33 in diameter), can I effectively double the two flat dimensions to give me more drops? (And would it give me more drops, I would assume so if there is spawnable land around?)

Also, is there a point to the hollow inside? Would it become more effective if I was to add more spawning floor inside?

I can't say I've tried this on a SMP but, I'm guessing you should still be able to pull 7-10,000 out of it. Of course, I cut out everything around it to max output. The key to efficiency is isolating the spawning within the tower. From the collection point, there should be a 144 block perimeter around the tower where, if your not going to cut everything out, at least try to explore all the cave systems and light them with torches. Either way, even if it only puts out 5,000 an hour, should still be plenty of loot for your server! Good luck :)

Ok, Ill let you know how it goes, when we eventually get around to it. It will be in an area that doesnt spawn (spawn city, completely half slabbed)

I don't have an MCEdit schematic for this one. I use World Edit,  so I can't really help you but, feel free to download the world save and make your own schematic :)

Yo I know I sound like a noober here, but I've tore this thing apart trying to figure it out haha. Where do the mobs spawn? I always thought they needed at least 3 squares of space between the floor & ceiling and wouldn't spawn on water. Where are they all coming from? lol!

The mobs spawn on the stone areas surrounding the water channels (you can't see it in the images but you can see it in the video). Mobs only need two vertical blocks to spawn. The spawning rules on the amount of horizontal blocks gets a bit more complicated :D

Thing killed the game for me..... Frame rate went to new lows. :D

This has to be one of the coolest things I have ever seen made for Minecraft.  Down right ingenious.

How tall is this?? Is it lower than 64 blocks? I ask only for to make it into a schematic and place it in my own world but i dont want to place it down to the bedrock :I

Nah it's bedrock to height limit. Every spawn floor is exactly the same though, so you could easily crop it off at just about any height you want then put a new roof on it. Of course that will effect the output to a certain degree :)
