After seeing a photo of this temple located in Kolkata (Calcutta), West Bengal, India, I just had to try to see if I could build it in minecraft. The most notable feature to me is the styling of the towers since they look like they were made in minecraft with their blocky design.
During the creation of this project, I had to make the building larger than it is in real life in order to get enough detail to show. Also, I used 4 photos to re-create this structure found on the internet by doing a google search for "Dakshineswar temple". I have never visited India let alone this temple.
Overall Project Dimensions:
Width: 275 blocks/meters
Depth: 275 blocks/meters
Height: 250 blocks/meters
Temple Dimensions:
Width: 145 blocks/meters
Depth: 145 blocks/meters
Height: 230 blocks/meters
Real World Dimensions are about 14x14x30 meters. So with that being said, my temple, if it was proportionally scaled up, should be 310 blocks/meters high. I am short by about 80 blocks/meters.
Total Estimated Build Time: 10 hours. I really dont' keep track. I work on these things off and on through out the day. I started it yesterday and this is how far I got in about 24 hours.
Errors/Discrepancies:
The curve of the building roof/wall lines are too shallow in my version. The overall building is wider or shorter (take your pick) than the original.
Note: the main hold up on this project are the sandstone steps that need to be added into the game with the release of 1.3. Currently I am using wooden steps as place holders.
Things to do:
Add internal steps and walkways leading up to the top. (still looking for photos of the inside and haven't found any)
Building Materials Used:
601 Glowstone Blocks
1151 Torches
23055 Sandstone Slabs
75784 Red Wool Blocks
1919481 Sandstone Blocks

Update #3 : by backslashdotcom 06/15/2012 1:16:42 amJun 15th, 2012
I added a MCEdit schematic file but I was not able to test it properly since the temple is quite large. It crashed my server during the //paste command during my file testing. Please let me know if you have any problems with it.
