I've been working on a height map of Middle Earth which is based on the well known Tolkien map. My goal is to make the map match the coast lines, rivers, lakes and mountains but to also to visually match scenes from the movies. The landscape has been built so that all of the rivers flow correctly. The height map I've created exists as a 1 to 1 scale model which I can export out to any size. Currently with the minecraft 255 height limit the map is limited to 20471x20471. We have also created custom trees, rocks and bushes to populate to the world using WorldPainter. The current video show our current Rivendell location. The current on disk size of the world is 9.7Gb.

Build a better Middle Earth Contest:

I've decided to make the Lonely Mountain available as saved mini-map download.

This map has no structures built on it. Anyone who wants to build either Erebor or Dale can download the map zip file and begin building. Once you have completed your build send me a copy of the updated map file along with some screen shots and I will put them up as a project. The project that gets the most diamonds will win the competition. The winners build will get incorporated into the master DMEMC world and credit will be given.

The contest will end on May 10th.

To get to the Lonely Mountain teleport to 3487 201 -6612

If you use this map for commercial use you must first get our permission.

I am currently working on adding new trees, brushes, and rock Eco-systems to the dmemc world. All of the trees, bushes and rocks extend under ground. For the trees and bushes this means that they have roots. I am also adding details seen in the Hobbit to the landscape. Once a stable version of bukkit server version 1.5.x is out I will make the new world available. I will post some updated images over then next week.

I've had many requests for a PVP version of our server. What do you think about setting up a copy our Middle Earth Map as a Factions server? I would love to hear what you think about this idea. If there is enough interest I will work to get it setup.

I've had numerous request to help build on the map. The problem I face is that I want to maintain a certain look and feel to the world as a whole. So I was thinking about making some of the locations available as a schematic so that people could build on it. For example Erebor, Bree, Hobbiton or Dol Guldur. Then people could work on them and submit them to me to put into my project page The schematic that has the highest rating would be put into the master Digital Middle Earth map and the author given credit. The only requirement is that the build sites need to match as close as possible to the movies scenes or descriptions from the books.

Let me know what you think of this idea.

The Lonely Mountain schematic is too large for most computers to import. Need to come up with a different method for making the locations available for people to work on.

We have been working on some new objects for our world and will be re-generating the map. The map will have new trees, rocks, brushes, water pools, lava pools, ruins, and dungeons. We think these new objects and how they will be placed will really improve the visual look and feel of our Middle Earth world. Stay tuned

Made some major changes to Rivendell. The house of Elrond was moved and rotate to better match the scenes from the Fellowship of the Ring. I also started adding scene elements that were seen in the Hobbit. Check out the new photo's in the gallery. Also if anyone wants to walk around our Middle Earth map just send me a PM and I will startup the server.
