This is a MASSIVE MAP I've been working on in WorldPainter
The map is approximately 24,000 x 24,000 blocks

Inspired by the Hobbit and Lord of the Rings and All of Tolkien's works that I've read since childhood.

My Intention: provide the Middle Earth LANDSCAPE for you to build your own cities!
I have no intention of building the cities. That's for you to do!

(I am aware of MCME, but that is not my goal)

MAP DOWNLOADS are NOT FINAL releases!

Current download is MMEM-Beta1 ~2Gb

Beta-1 Patched to be released Jan 3rd. : 12/30/2013 1:28:53 pm12/30/13

I will release a patched up Beta-1 that removes all of the low laying beaches in random areas around the continent that will be Jan 3rd.

Update #31 : 12/30/2013 1:28:16 pm12/30/13

A very generous donation has made it possible for me to purchase World Machine! I will be touching up all of the landscape and putting in new features to the plain flat parts of the map.

Update #30 : 10/21/2013 11:16:55 pm10/21/13

Okay guys, it has been a long time since I've updated. What I want to do is get a complete list of any bugs that you find in the beta map. My schedule has finally lightened up enough for me to start working on this map again. Bugs that have already been reported: Small beaches everywhere. The plains near Minas Tirith are too small Post your suggestions/ critique / bugs ASAP so I can get a polished copy out.

Update #29 : 07/22/2013 4:12:40 pm7/22/13

Got a few hours of editing done : 07/13/2013 11:57:21 am7/13/13

flattening out the plains, bringing up the stupid beaches in the middle of plains, about 60 % done with removing the annoying beaches... will start terraforming the untouched parts soon.

Editing station upgrade. : 07/11/2013 1:09:46 pm7/11/13

Concept map: Valinor. : 07/01/2013 12:54:20 am7/01/13

MMEM-Beta1 had several areas untouched that were plains etc. I have done mountains before but plains were actually more challenging so I wanted to do a concept map on a smaller scale with my custom brushes to see how they would look. I was asked to make a map similar to Middle Earth. Without further ado I give you VALINOR: 178.32.51.223

Beta map released to public. Busy. : 06/28/2013 4:55:35 pm6/28/13

Unfinished beta map. I've been very busy moving and working three jobs. My computer just got set up again but by special request I'm going to release the beta map to the public.

New areas marked on the map. : 04/22/2013 4:04:17 pm4/22/13

That's all for now, about 90 percent done with terraforming

BETA Pushed Back : 03/26/2013 12:46:45 am3/26/13

Beta Release is delayed due to the following:
  • Terraforming not finished
  • I haven't painted ANY BIOMES
  • There are no trees on the map.

Good news:
  • I have SPRING BREAK next week
  • I will have lots of time to work on MMEM

That said, thanks for following the project! I will try to release on 4/6 (Saturday)

Grey Mountains : 03/25/2013 1:05:55 am3/25/13

About 20 percent done with the Grey Mountains. These are a long strand in the North that breaks out into two smaller strands, between which is the charred area called the "Withered Heath". This is a breading ground for dragons, Smaug being the chief.

Nope. Still too early to tell. Here is my most recent progress. I have mapped out most of the major wooded areas and taken an inventory of trees that should be in each area. Based on the wiki and quotes from the books. All this is in a huge spreadsheet from which I will reference when putting in the final forest layers
Edit Reply Delete
I think this is wonderful what your doing! I hope Mirkwood looks epic! Do you have it done yet? I'd donate, but I'm only like... 10 years old ><

Hey man, I hope progress is moving along well! Any ideas for the release date? Can't wait for the finished product! After this you should do a map of Beleriand haha keep it up! :D

Wow just what I was looking for! Great job!
It is a good idea to upload it in creative mode for the buildings! (ilikegirls37)
Can't wait untill it's finished! ;D It is going to be a download yes? :)
Edit Reply Delete
I'm the 100th diamond, whoop! whoop! Thank you so much for doing this, my friend! I was going to do something similar, but I suck at using World Paint lol. Can't wait until total completion! I downloaded what you have so far and it looks amazing. But, I have a question: Where in Middle Earth is the spawn point at? I couldn't fly to get a possible idea of where I was, so also, when you're totally finished, you might want to upload it in creative mode instead of survival. That would make building (amongst other things) a lot easier ;D Keep it up man!

You can change single player to creative by pressing ESC and selecting Open to LAN, then changing survival to creative.

Meanwhile, to figure out where to teleport consult his large map found HERE. Open it in a paint program and note the x/y coordinates of where you want to go. Multiply by 10. In minecraft, simply teleport to that number but using them for x/z.

Examples:

Wizard's Vale (location of Isengard) is found at x=1255, y=1092 on the world map I linked above. Those would become 12550 and 10920, and to teleport in minecraft I would type:

/tp 12550 100 10920

Putting me 100 units up in the air at that spot.

Some other spots:

Helm's Deep: 12600 100 11800 (I think)
Hobbiton: 7500 100 6620 (I think)
Buckland: 8270 100 6880 (I think)
Old Forest: 8390 100 7040
Bree: 9000 100 6660
Moria: 13810 100 8480 (of course it's not created, but this is the mountain area it would be UNDER, with the east gate exiting near the small lake and the west gate somewhere on the west flank of these mountains)
Minas Tirith: 18110 100 14060 (again, where Minas Tirth would go)
Black Gate of Mordor: 19120 100 12310
Lonely Mountain: 20230 100 4560

Etc., etc.

Have fun!

I can't say I have worked on it lately, but there is a public download of the beta. I have a version of the map that has eliminated all the annoying beaches in the low spots. I could put that up if y'all are desperate for an update. My landscape and lawncare business should be slowing down end of October. I planned on resuming development then :)

Yes, also the Shire is missing the pool. The little pond/lake that has a bridge going over it to the Green Dragon Inn. There is a Hobbiton map here on PMC that is a fine example of a slice of Hobbiton.

Also, it does seem like the scale/rivers are a bit off in the Shire.

Hey everybody, I just figured out a cool and accurate way of navigating Middle Earth using the dynmap (or even just the static map will do).

All you have to do is make a map within Minecraft of the region you're in and zoom it out to the maximum of 4x. Then fully explore it. Cross reference that with the map of the Middle Earth map; and then cross reference that with a real Middle Earth map (google images), to then see where to put landmarks, buildings etc. Using this method, I easily was able to find exactly where Hobbiton is supposed to go, as well as the Brandywine Bridge and (I think) the hill where Bag End goes. Rei's Minimap will also come in handy for this, but mainly as a compass/guide since it is more zoomed in. (Or for navigating cities/towns if you build them). Hope this can be of help for anyone looking for an easy way to explore the map!
