The Consolidated PBY Catalina was an American flying boat and, later, an amphibious aircraft - meaning it could take off from both land and water due to the addition of retractable landing gear on later versions.

With 3,305 Catalina's being built, it was one of the most widely used seaplanes of WW2, servering with several different allied nations.  The Catalina was especially good and long range operations and was a durable aircraft, throughout the second world war it was used it several roles:

Anti-Submarine Warfare, Maritime patrol/recon, night attack and search and rescue.

There are 2 Catalina's n the picture here, the white one is the British RAF coastal command Catalina MkIVa - which is basically a Catalina PBY-5a.   There is also a Catalina PBY-5a 'Black Cat' - these were used for night attacks against the Japanese in the pacific.
