TEXTURE PACK TO VIEW THIS WORLD PROPERLY:
So I made the ENTIRE world of Studio Ghibli's Spirited Away, from when they park their car to when Chihiro goes to Zeniba's cottage in the swamp, and EVERYTHING in between. My goal is to get as close as possible to feeling like you're in the movie. To do this, everything is recreated in 1 to 1 scale by cross referencing 416 movie screenshots, as well as watching the movie repeatedly. I also created a custom texture pack, using my artistic abilities to change each block to play a specific role in emulating the backgrounds of the movie.
I began this project in 2011, and after a year or so, I called it finished. But coming back in 2013, I saw so many new blocks that I just had to use those blocks to make the project better. When I came back to the world, I also found hundreds of other things that needed to be fixed, or made more pretty.
The major edits are done using MCedit, and the rest is done in-game.

Additional NotesIn order to view the world properly, you need my custom texture pack.
Otherwise you'll be seeing a lot of ugly nether brick and glowstone.
I gave glowstone a wood texture in order to make the entire bath area lit up without sunlight.
I gave nether brick a nice red texture so I could have red fences, red slabs, red stairs.
I used a lot of paintings. The bathing area walls are covered with tree designs, made up of many tree pieces.
I also constructed the bathhouse as a 3D modeling project.

BACK OF THE BATHHOUSE: I hollowed out the entire bathhouse and erased what was in the back of it, and started again from scratch. All the scenes in the movie that show the back of the bathhouse are a little different, so I did my best to compromise between all of them. The window that Chihiro comes out is there, as well as the pipe and ladder that goes up to the top. The rooms/protruding houses around it are matched to what they look like in the movie.
DORMITORY: There are now two dorm rooms - womens and mens on two levels, and behind them is a pathway that leads to the main dorm hall where all the dorm areas intersect, and workers go up the stairs to get to work. I also made the main dorm office, where Haku introduces Chihiro to the rest of the workers.
YUBABA'S FLOOR: I COMPLETELY redid Yubaba's floor. Basically, the movie overdramatizes the scale of this floor, so it's impossible to make it accurate but also feel the same scale. so the design I came up with allows the maximum usage of space while allowing for all the hallways and rooms seen in the movie to exist.
ELEVATORS: I made an elevator that goes from the bottom of the atrium to the ground level, and another elevator that goes from the third floor to the guest rooms and Yubaba's floor. I had to experiment with redstone for a while to get it to have two buttons, one that takes you to the guest rooms and one that takes you to Yubaba's floor.
YUBABA'S MAGIC DOORS: I used redstone to have the doors open in sequence as they do in the movie.
GHOST TOWN: me and some friends worked on redesigning three of the ghost town buildings, they now stand out very much, and I plan to redesign all of the buildings to look like those. I installed daylight sensors to these three buildings, so when it gets dark, the lights come on. The entrance to the ghost town was very incorrect before - I gave it more of a slope and a winding path made of stone slabs. The buildings at the entrance were redesigned and weathered up.
BOILER ROOM: I had a problem with the pistons that opened and closed the little opening of the boiler to put the coal in - it would freeze up. I found a solution that involved a minecart going in a circle constantly updating the redstone repeaters so they never freeze up. Now the boiler moves!!! The smokestack is now hollow, so it's possible to travel from the boiler room to the top of the smokestack if you really try.
PIG FARM: I added the room that Chihiro and Haku pass through that was filled with animal carcasses. Made many updates to the texture pack that allowed for dead carcasses.
OCEAN: COMPLETELY terraformed the ocean floor. that took forever, even in MCedit.
TRAIN TRACK: This is over the top, but I wanted music to play as you ride the cart. I spent a whole day and a half composing "One Summer's Day" in Noteblock Studio and editing the exported schematic in MCedit to function on a minecart track without seeing the noteblocks. I also composed "The Sixth Station" in Noteblock studio, you can listen to that one in the air to the left of the track.
ZENIBA'S SWAMP: COMPLETELY redid the swamp when I realized it didn't look like the swamp at all, the trees weren't big enough and the house actually needed to be facing north, not east. But with so many giant trees the lag became unbearable so I used another MCedit filter to hollow out the trees and fill them with solid wood. There's still lag but its not as bad. At the end of the track, if you keep following it, is a Nether portal that lets you travel back to the bathhouse. There's a rail track in the nether, and when you get in one cart and travel to the other end, a detector rail takes the cart from the other end and moves it to the end that you came from.

I completely remade the flower area where Haku takes Chihiro to see her parents in the pig farm, and added flowers on every block. lots of flowers. Almost wish there were 3-high flowers to get the full effect.
I replaced colored clay with stained glass in many areas in the interior of the bathing area, particularly above where the foreman hands out bath tokens. changed the sides of that room as well as the bridge on the third level to look much more attractive.
Made Chihiro's dorm area look SICK by using haybales as the tatami mats, doors for the walls, carpet as sleeping bags, and a working light switch.
After reading "The Art of Spirited Away" and looking at concept sketches,I realize that I had the layout of the interior done entirely wrong. There is actually an atrium shaft that goes from the bottom floor all the way to the top of the building, but I only had it go up three floors and then become a kitchen. That is currently under heavy construction, I deleted most of the rooms that were in the way of the atrium, so right now it's just solid stone. I added the tower on the top of the building, which I should have added a long time ago, which I think represents the top of the atrium.
Also widened the entire bathhouse by 8 blocks to make the bath area bigger. Some rooms may have "stretch marks" as a result.
Added the secondary tower/bath area that exists on the exterior, to the right if facing the building. You never see it close up, but it exists.

Pig farm looks SO MUCH BETTER (except that I forgot to add pigs in the latest download file, thats the finishing touch) and it's so much more accurate too, with four/five buildings instead of 2.
Added a rail system that connects the first building to the railway beside the bathhouse.
added smoke coming out of the smokestack.
There's SO MUCH MORE to do, I don't know why I marked this as being 100% finished a year ago. I set it to a more accurate 85%.

I figured out that what really adds realism is grunge. I added various colors to exterior walls to show weathering, I made it so borders between two types of blocks got broken up a bit more, by using the erode filter in MCedit, I also added occasional blocks of dirt among the sand near the pig pens, and placed tall grass on them.

I added the room that No-face is in when he's going crazy, and where he throws up.
I made most of the rooms on the backside of the bathhouse actually connect with the rest of the bathhouse.
The pig farm looks much better with iron bars, also there is more variety of vegetables growing around them (reeds, melons, crops, cactus)
If you die, you respawn in the dorm room that Chihiro sleeps in.
Minecarts are provided at the train stop to Swamp Bottom.
The next stop on the train has a tunnel that leads to the Void.
Since the update made it so that if you are below the surface level, distant things become black, the train ride and Swamp Bottom became weird. Now there's floating particles everywhere as if you are underwater. I think it adds to the swampy feel though.

I also used pistons to give some moving parts to the boiler room and bottom elevator. They moved for me when I made them but when you quit the game and restart they stop moving. So sad. Also added tall grass to the field, looks much more fieldy.
The texture pack is very different. It's so much better than before.
