Here's a GIANT mob trap and item harvesting machine that TazRunner built on our server. It collects about 2,100 items per hour.

Unlike most giant mob traps, this one is fully exposed, well lit, and easy to look into and watch at work.

As you see in the video, the main alley that the mobs fall into is open to sunlight (the mobs don't have time to burn before falling into the water, and the water keeps them from burning in the sunlight).

The mobs actually spawn in the dark side alleys which go back 150+ blocks. One alley was built initially by hand as a template and then was duplicated using World Edit.

I just wish I had taken videos the night we activated the spawning alleys. Three of us ran around and started the water flowing in each alley, which also blacked out the alley as it washed away the torches, and then we had to get the heck out of the pitch black dark alley before a mob spawned, move to the next alley, rinse, repeat... it lagged the hell out of the server until all the water found it's paths.

Another nice feature, as you'll see in the video, is how all the collected items are delivered via a drop-chute. You just stand under the chute and let hundreds of items fall on you.

It's absolutely mesmerizing to watch this trap work. As you can see in the video the trap features an observation deck which puts 1 glass block between you and hundreds of creatures on a water conveyor of death as they run into the lava that kills them.

The texture mod is Minecraft Enhanced with 128-bit textures and Better Light enabled, plus Drexul's texture pack.

TazRunner is currently working on a more efficient design (this design loses a lot of string). Initial tests gave us 3,100+ items per hour and he's hoping to tweak it to get a bit more.

Absolutely amazing !

Is it the current world record of number of items dropped per hour ? :D

Another question : with World Edit plugin, can you copy/paste again and again your part of trap as seen on the screenshot ? What is the minimum length between two 1-block heights of water stream ? Thank you in advance.

Well TazRunner has built a 3100 items per hour trap since this was built, and I've seen people claiming even higher numbers.

Yes, with WorldEdit you can repeatedly copy and paste, which is how Taz duplicated all those spawning alleys. WorldEdit can be a bit techie to install HOWEVER another excellent editing app is MCEdit (and it supports the same schematic files that WorldEdit does). MCEdit is a stand alone program and works with single player worlds as well as multiplayer.

The water streams are continuous from the top of the alleys and since water only flows 8 blocks the alley steps are 7 blocks long. When water falls it then flows another 8 blocks so as long as each step is 7 blocks then water will flow all the way from the top to the outlet. The last step is 8 blocks long so the water doesn't flow off of it.

Thank you very much for these informations. :)
I've seen a about-40000-items-per-hour trap (which, I think, is the world record. Anyway it could be beaten.) but that was crazy too much. The one you're showing is actually easier to set up but very efficient for a multiplayer project.

Keep up the good work !

@Zomb:
The texture pack is the HD Texture Fix (also known as Minecraft Enhanced). I'm using Drexul's custom 128bit textures which he hasn't made public yet.
