GUNBOAT PG2 - USS PETREL - "The Baby Battleship"
3rd in Line at the Battle of Manila Bay, 1898, led by the USFS Olympia.

Dimensions: 67m length, 13m beam, 4m draft
Stats: Tonnage: 892 Tons
Top Speed: 11knots
Propulsion: Back-acting compound steam engine, powered by two straight-way coal-fired boilers.
Purpose: Navigating and controlling shallow ports and rivers; bombarding coastal towns.

This is a 1.25:1 Minecraft model of the USS Petrel, a small gunboat used extensively in the Spanish-American War of 1898.  This boat served alongside the more famous USS Olympia during the Battle of Manila Bay on May 1st, 1898.  Affectionately dubbed "The Baby Battleship" by the Asiatic Squadron, this boat had an excessive armament for its size, packing four 6" naval guns, two 3lber naval guns, 2 gatling guns, two revolving 37mm guns, and one 1lber rapid-fire gun.

The Petrel had a crew or 112 sailors and 10 officers. Between 1898 and 1901, four of her crew members obtained the Medal of Honor.

Hey, nice little boat. Too bad you can not build a decent Rigging in Minecraft. I just read that you still build a bigger ship, which is it ?

I also do just a an older ship, but it will not post here, this is your Category :)

Looking good, you and your historical ships. <33

The hull has too many straight lines, try to keep the lines angled towards the stern or bow of the ship

I did give your hull-rounding idea a try, while still maintaining the flat sides of the ship, and I do like the effect.  Thank you for the advice.

no problem, I know you strive for historical accuracy but some concessions need to be made for the sake of building an organic hull. :)

I tend to imagine my horizontal blocks as strakes, and working on a rather large steam warship as a historical preservationist taught me that these ships were very flat-sided vessels for most of their freeboard. I want to create that look.
