The USS Ticonderoga was the first of the Ticonderoga-class guided-missile cruisers. She was named after the Capture of Fort Ticonderoga, in 1775. The Ticonderoga, or Tico was ordered on the 22nd September 1978, as a guided-missile destroyer. She was changed to a cruiser, because of the capabilities of the AEGIS Combat System. She was built at Ingalls Shipbuilding and was launched on the 25th April 1981. She was commissioned nearly 2 years later and served on until late September 2004. She is currently at the Naval Inactive Ship Maintenance Facility, in Philadelphia.
