Elephant facts:
Healthy adult elephants have no natural predators, although lions may take calves or weak individuals. They are, however, threatened by human intrusion and poaching.
Elephants are a symbol of wisdom in Asian cultures and are famed for their memory and intellegence; their intelligence level is thought to be comparable to that of dolphins and primates.
The earliest known ancestors of modern-day elephants evolved about 60 million years ago. Moeritherium, the ancestor of the elephants from 37 million years ago was aquatic and had a similar lifestyle to a hippo.
