In the year 2552, there was Eridanus-II, a remote planet that was being protected by the UNSC. But, to destroy human rebellion, Dr. Catherine Halsey sent out scouts to keep an eye on a few children who proved worthy to become Spartans. Soldiers who were born for combat and bred for war. They traversed many different planets in search of one hundred fifty candidates, destined to become Spartans. But one day, the UNSC found a boy who stood out from the rest. A boy named John.
At the age of six, Halsey visited John personally, asking him to identify which side of the coin would land face up. John guessed correctly and, based on his luck, was kidnapped along with seventy-three other children, destined to become Spartan-II's. They were briefed on what their duty would be, that duty being "The Protectors of Earth and all her colonies". They were soon augmented with a special serum that would make them faster, stronger, and better at about everything.
But before becoming an experiment, John was assigned with a squad to be transported to a small planet. Him and his squad were supposed to navigate the land to find the UNSC Pelican waiting for them. As John and his squadmates found the Pelican, John, believing the marines were hostile, ordered his squad to batter them with rocks. Leaving three mortally wounded and one almost dead.
They arrived back to the UNSC safely, but he angered CPO Mendez. Even so, he surprised Halsey with his elusive initiative and strong take on leadership. The next day, he learned his new Spartan Tag: John-117.

Like the others, you were strong, and swift, and brave, a natural leader. But you had something they didn't, something no one saw but me. Can you guess..? Luck. Was I wrong?"
