This is a big thank you to all my subscribers , it's an honor to have so many people interested in what i get up too. I decided to make a timelapse and tutorial where i talk about what i'm doing and give you a step by step below. Sorry for my mumbling in the video, i don't speak over videos often so very nervous xD.
So here we go!
Firstly when making any skin (Based from a picture) , your going to want to get as many pictures as possible to use for reference. Now ideally you want as many as you can get from the one scene so that the colors are the same. Having one where the character is out in the daylight and another at nighttime can throw off your skin. However this applies only to the skins your basing the color off of, you can have as many general pictures as you want.
Next thing you want to do is to get the colors your going to use. You can see that i've got all the ones i need on the right and top left. I like to get my dark/light transitions done before hand so all i'm doing is drawing the skin.
Make sure you save this as [Mystogan - Step 1] , because your going to want to save regularly and in various steps so that you can make mistakes but have something to fall back on.
Also that face is from another of my skins but i don't use much of it to end with.
Pretty self explanatory what you do here, just draw the skin as best as you can. As with anything getting it right just takes practice. There is one thing to note here, on the back body and top of the legs there is a line that's darker than the rest of the skin, i use these where the color is the same or similar and i want to draw a distinct boundary for when i come to shade.
Feel free to save this pics if you want a closer look at what i'm talking about. Now the general rule with head shading is the corners are darker and you transition to ligher colors as you go to the centre of the skin. This gives a rounded effect which is what you want. With the mask i tried to keep to that but also give it a cloth look. You don't have to religiously follow this but it's good to stick by general rules.
Sorry for the large jump but i didn't have an inbetween stage. I got rid of the sash since i don't intend to add his staves in this skin but might do in another. Same rules as with the head apply to the front body, corners darker transition to lighter, however the right and left will be naturally darker and you have to show this in the skin. I like to do a triangle shade as you can see above. Also parts of the body that should pop out like the cloak over the main (light gray) body , you'll want to show by make it darker where there would be a shadow.
With the legs and arms similar rules apply , the outer leg will be lighter and the inner darker as i've done above. You don't have to religiously stick to the corner darker rule which i don't tend to do with the legs or arms. With the arms i like to use a zig zag shade since the outer shoulder (top left of the front part) will be light naturally.
Another side note, always make sure to draw the bottom body and top leg properly and look at it from the front and back of the skin so it looks right. Don't make just a solid color for it. It may not be fully visible but it can take away from a really great skin. Don't be lazy :D
Capes i don't have a great deal of advice for as i've not really gotten the hang of it yet. Once you finish make sure you go back and tidy up bits and pieces and make sure there arn't any mistakes (though i've uploaded with a few before)
Tidy up the skin if you have colors in the file. It's always a nice touch to put in a logo or sign the skin, my personal one is the fairy tail guild logo which i'm updating ^^.
