This is Sonny, the main character of the Flash game Sonny (!)
These are the pictures I used for reference:
I absolutely loved the game and it's sequel when I played them a few years ago!

I'll explain it here and possibly make a video or a blog.
Here's a thread that helped me: Way of the Skin.
So I start by just painting every color where it should be. After I have the
complete skin colored, I go to Gimp and open up my skin.png and the
reference picture. I make sure the colors are correct with the
pipette/dropper tool. You can do this step with paint.net too I think.
Then I go back to SkinEdit and start the shading:
I take the burn/dodge tool and set it to a smaller degree (tool settings, then
slide to the left). I darken one pixel (by right-clicking), then the pixel again
and the pixels around it too:
1. [0][0][0][0][0] At the beginning
2. [0][0][1][0][0] First layer
3. [0][1][2][1][0] Second layer
4. [1][2][3][2][1] Third layer
(the numbers in brackets stand for the darkness)
The same goes for making light places (head/stomach/butt/muscles)
by left clicking.
For the chest I tend to experiment around for a long time until I have
a good outcome. I usually make 4 pixels dark 3 or 4 rows from the top:
[0][0][0][0][0][0][0][0]
[0][0][0][0][0][0][0][0]
[0][0][0][0][0][0][0][0]
[0][1][1][0][0][1][1][0]
I then work from there making some pixels above lighter, some below darker...
Where to shade:
I make the 'first' dark pixels on the top of the inside of the arm,
on the top of the inside of the leg and on the bottom of the sides of the
body. Then I do the lighter parts like shoulders/top of the sides of the arm,
stomach, knees, back and top of the head (if there are't any details like
hair).

edit: since you said you wanted feedback... the arms look good, but don't quite match up with the torso. if you tried to match the inner edges of the arms to the outer edges of his chest and back, they would blend much better.
