The Barrage Balloon were used widely during WW1 and WW2. The RAF used them extensively during the Battle of Britain to deter ground attack aircraft. Their steal cable were designed to slice the wings off of aircraft upon contact. Some were even outfitted with explosives that would slide down the cable and hit an aircraft. While their effectiveness was limited they were an important piece of physical deterrence to aircraft strike.
