Level 2 : Apprentice Ranger

Reese stretched as her alarm clocked rang out singing, “Wake up, Wake up, sleepyhead!”. Reese slammed her hand down, on the home-made clock when she let her arms down from stretching. Reese was a black-haired girl, with Tan skin and a load of freckles along her upper nose, and cheeks.

She smiled, got up and tripped her theft-alarm. She walked over to the far wall, scanned herself and the alarm stopped. She glanced at the wardrobe. “Londyn, commence morning schedule, starting now!” She yelled, then ran, and skidded to the wardrobe. “Commencing,” The AI replied. “Shall I wake up Professor, Kai Atlas?” Reese stopped, mid-skid. “Hmm... Yeah.” She continued her epic skid to the wardrobe, but gave up, and changed it to a gentle ice-skate formation. She smiled, opened the wardrobe, and then glided to the bathroom, kicked her slippers off, and listened. She heard the faint, familiar yelling from Prof. Kai Atlas’s room. Kai Atlas was her father, and her only family that DIDN’T pester her when she didn’t want it. “Morning, dad! Taking a shower!” Reese called down the hall, to the angry shouting that echoed down the hall. The shouting stopped to echo back a ‘Hello’ then continued beginning to get louder as he exited his room, and walked to the stairs.

The shouts ended as soon as the bathroom door slid shut behind her. She slipped her robe and pjs off, then slid quietly slid into the shower. As soon as she was done, she blow-dried her hair, brush and combed it, then hung it in long, beautiful braid. She popped her black tights on, hastily yanked her apricot shirt, and long white Lab-coat on, and dashed downstairs to the kitchen. She grabbed her plate from the counter, while sliding past. Milly the family cook had her back turned, and was startled when Reese shot by, grabbing her plate in one hand, while balancing books in the other. “Now, be careful, you’ll drop them all if you aren’t!” Milly scolded. Reese tried to smile, but she had toast in her mouth, so she dropped it on her plate. “I will!” She called back, then zipped off to the dining hall.

Her younger three, sleepy teenage triplet brothers were at the table, talking about the latest game they had gotten. Reese’s mother had died 6 years ago in an unexpected, yet deadly, wave of the Flu. Or so the doctors said. Reese put her plate, and books down on the table, and began to eat, and study at the same time. “What’s your rush this time?” Xavier asked, looking at the books. “Oh, nothing much just going to the International space station to interview some giant rocks!” Reese said, excitedly. “Really?” Kai asked, sounding amused. “Really!” Reese said, sounding hyper. “Well, don’t forget your tool set this time,” Kai said teasingly. “And your bag,” “And your Clip board.” “And us!” Xavier, Kalen, and Rune put in hopefully. Reese smiled playfully. “Maybe I’ll get a souvenir, and forget that too!” Reese knew her brothers were fascinated by the topics her job brought up, and would hate if she forgot to bring a souvenir. They gasped, then everyone laughed.

Reese check her watch. “I gotta go, I’ll cya all later next week!!” She called, then raced for the door, grabbing her books, a piece of toast, and her bag. She had packed everything the previous night. “If I’m not back by next Friday I’m too fascinated by my work there, or I’m staying an extra night!” She called. “Bye!” Everyone called back. Reese ran out the door, slung her pack over her shoulder, and raced to the taxi waiting outside. She pulled the door open, and flung herself inside.

“Your excited, today!” The taxi driver said, laughing. “Yup! Onward to the Airport!” She said, feeling hyper. “Onward we shall go then, m’lady!” Jeff had been their taxi driver since before the mother died. They both sang until they got to the airport. Reese left a tip getting out, waved to Jeff and made her way through the crowded lines. She smiled on the way to the front desk. “Washington, D.C please?” She felt excitement run through her like a river. She noticed the desk attendant frowning, and looking bored. “You’re never fully dressed without a smile!” Reese advised, scooting past the desk. The attendant looked surprised, but took the advice and treated the next customer, only with a smile and good attitude this time. She wanted to run, jump, even scream for joy.

She nearly raced to her seat in room 3 but forced herself to walk. She screamed internally. After a while, a voice came over the comm. Flight to Washington, D.C. please come to Dock 3! Reese walked over to the plane, and lined up with a few others. People lined up behind her. She looked around excitedly. She spotted Jeff in a corner, and then glanced at the person he was talking to, but Reese looked back up to the plane because the flight attendant had opened the door. After she stepped up to the plane, she got inside, and sat down. She wiggled slightly, then looked out the window.

Five hours later the flight attendant called everyone to wake up, and get prepared for landing. Reese woke up, and looked around. She grinned, and pulled her things close to her. They soon landed, and as soon as she got out of the airport property, RAN towards the nearest taxi, and knocked. The Taxi driver opened the door. “Thank you!” Reese slid in excitedly, and shut the door. “Where to, miss?” “NASA station, please!” The Taxi driver smiled, and sighed exasperatedly. “Right away.” The drive took 20 minutes, but it felt like forever. “You’re used to excitement, or bored of it?” Reese asked suspiciously. “Both I guess, but I guess the nice part of the job is that you get to see the city.” The driver said.

As soon as they stopped Reese lept up, dropped a tip, and raced toward the NASA building. She stopped in front of security, pulled out her I.D, and showed the guard. The guard let her pass, and she surged forward, and hunted down the room she was supposed to be in. She burst in, took one look inside and gasped. She saw an amazing sight. Giant robots, and enormous pieces of asteroid, and metal, and tools scattered everywhere.

"I see your fascinated by our recent find… Dr. Reese… Correct?” A voice rang out clear, and strong. She looked around, and spotted the speaker. “Yeah! I’ve loved engineering, and space since I was five!” She felt a surge of excitement sweep over her. Reese thought she saw one of robots move out of the corner of her eye, but ignored it. “So, you’re going to be staying for our expedition?” They asked. “Correcto!” “Well, Looks like you’re ready for work!” He smiled. “My names, Verai. I’m the Head of Operations for the project!” “Cool, so where will I be?” Reese asked, eager to get to work. Verai laughed. “You aren’t working quite yet. I’m sure you’d love to, and I want you to as well, but we have other things to discuss for the meantime.” Reese felt put out. “Ok!” She said, trying to sound eager.

Three hours later Reese walked close behind Verai to a hotel door, and followed inside. “Professor, Verai.” The person at the desk said, sounding happy. Reese guessed they knew each other very well. “Hello, Mrs. Cherry! I’ve come to show Ms. Reese here her bedroom. “3rd floor, room 336!” Mrs. Cherry explained cheerfully. “Thanks!” Reese said. She no longer sounded eager, but exhausted. “Long day?” The lady asked. “Very.” sighed Reese. They climbed onto the elevator, and went to her room. Reese thanked Verai, and sat down on the bed, letting the bag plop down beside her.

She checked her watch, and decided to call her brothers. After seven rings, they picked up. “They must’ve been in the living room, or doing homework.” She said, but it wasn’t her brothers… It was Londyn. “Hello, Miss Reese!” Londyn exclaimed. “Everyone else is gone! Is there anything you need?” Londyn didn’t sound right? “Oh! Uhh… No, not that I know of… Where did they go, and when?” Reese asked interested. “Ok! And they went down to who knows where, and about 20 minutes ago! Someone came to pick them up!” Londyn tried hinting at ‘pick them up’ but failed, and Reese didn’t notice. “Oh, okie! Tell them to leave me a message when they get back!” Reese hung up, stretched out and fell asleep, meanwhile Londyn was mumbling about intruders, kidnappers, and… Giant robots…
