Welcome to today's tutorial, brought to you by Dingo!
So, you want to know a thing or two about tools, do you? Well, it's a good thing you visited me today, for today is a tutorial about what tools to use in specific situations, and how long they'll last doing different activities!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Now, you didn't think we'd start right in, did you? You need to get some basic tools first. Go chop a tree, please. Check back when you're done.
-------------------------------------
All done? Good! Get yourself a crafting bench (1 log => x4 wood planks => crafting bench) and make some basic tools. Follow the example below if you need to. ;)
Good job! If you want, you can replace the wood planks with any of these four materials (once you gather them): cobblestone, iron ingots, gold ingots, and diamonds.
Read on to find out how long your precious new tools will last.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Different tool types have different
durability
. In Minecraft, the durability of an item depends mostly on the object it is being used upon. Other than that, all tools have a set amount of uses before breaking.

NB: Using the wrong tool on an object will count as two uses! (does not apply to fishing rods, bows, shears, or flint & steel)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Not all tools will work properly on the same surfaces. For example, if you try to hoe your garden with a pick axe, you won't get anywhere at all. Or dig in your mine with an axe. Or get maximum wool from a sheep by killing it with a sword (killing it gives you only 1 piece).
NB: Fishing rods only count uses when you actually catch a fish.
-------------------------------------
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Not all tools can break all materials. For example, certain ores can only be broken with certain pick axes. Iron ore can be mined by a stone pick, but not by a
wooden
pick or gold
pick. However, both can mine coal ore. See this diagram for a better idea:
(TIP:
W
ood
tools
last longer than
gold
, but
gold
tools can break blocks faster than
wood
.
)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I think you're ready! Go out into Minecraftia with a better knowledge of tool efficiency and which tools work best on certain objects. I salute you, pupil, as you ride off on your trusty pig to better yourself physically and mentally by mining and crafting.
For glory! :)
I leave you with this graphic:
;)
Ok Luis, as soon as updating's back up, I will fix it.
Thank you. ;)
But actually, a gold pick can't mine iron ore.
From Minecraft Wiki:
For example, while stone can be mined with any pickaxe, iron, gold, and diamond ore must be mined with an iron pickaxe or better, or else the player will harvest no ore.
