How to Reduce Lag in SMP and SSP

by jhask

1. Change your basic Minecraft Video Settings:

  • Change the Graphics option from "Fancy" to "Fast". This will drastically improve performance and reduce lag.
  • Lower your render distance. This makes less blocks render, resulting in less lag!
  • Slide that smooth lighting slider down to about half. It doesn't have a major effect on reducing lag, but it does a bit.
  • Instead of using "Power Saver" or "Balanced" for the Performance option, use "Max FPS" This will reduce framerate lag, although sacrificing battery power.
  • Make sure "3D Anaglyph" is off, because really, who uses 3D glasses when playing Minecraft?
  • Turn the "View Bobbing" option to off. This will reduce a good amount of lag.
  • Make sure the GUI Scale is set to a smaller size, this will reduce a little lag when opening the options and ESC menus.
  • If your computer has a fast GPU, turn on OpenGL. This only renders blocks in sight, not ones behind others, greatly reducing lag and improving performance. If your graphics card is not so good, you might not want to enable this.
  • Turn Clouds off. This will stop rendering clouds in-game, removing some lag.
2. Install Optifine.

  • Optifine is a great mod that works in singleplayer AND multiplayer. It adds many video and performance settings to the game such as the ability to turn off stars, particles, animations, remove the sun and moon, along with TONS of other options. The developer is currently updating to 1.3.1, although there is a test version already out that works fine. Optifine comes in many different packages, each with different features: some support anistropic filtering (that adds lag though, so don't use that unless your computer is beast :P). Installing and using Optifine greatly increases performance in-game and reduces lag by monumental amounts, even on the worst computers. You can find Optifine here: http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/249637-125-optifine-hd-c6-fps-boost-hd-textures-aa-af-and-much-more/
  • Optifine does not require modloader or any APIs to work. Just follow the installation instructions on the forum page and play virtually lag-free!
3. Allocate more memory to Java.

...You'd be surprised at how many people don't. And really, don't troll. I'll take constructive criticism but not flat out trolling.
