Follow these steps and you will be building great modern houses
Step 1
Find a good texture pack. By default, the textures in minecraft are boring if you are building this from of architecture. I would also recommend not using a mod, unless you have a link to that specific mod in your post.
Some texture packs I reccomend

Step 2
First, experiment with some materiels before building. Remember, think of what you want the end result to be. Just put your mind to it. It is always good to draw out the house, so you know what to make. Also, as a preliminary warning, KNOW HOW TO MAKE A FIREPLACE THE CORRECT WAY!!! flatten a good area before building,because you don't want to have your house nearly done and say "Awww Crap! Not enough room," (I've been that guy before).
Step 3
Be sure to (if on survival) to have adaquete materiels. If not, you will have to go and retreive them, which can be a pain. Be sure of your exact plan, or,as G-man from half-life^ would say "Prepare for unforeseen consequences,Mr.freeman"
Step 4
Be sure to look to real world inspirations. These are the first few modern houses that come up on google, bing, or whatever search engine you prefer. These usually are great homes. Also look to youtube for good homes in-game.(I reccomend Keralis
Step 5
