Hello! I am (not to lift myself up) but am somewhat of an expert at running private servers! I have hosted servers for friends and even have a great server with a couple hundred (I WISH) dedicated players!

The following blog will be all about how to set up and run, a great server. I am going to be blunt about this, but if your computer stinks, FORGET ABOUT RUNNING A SERVER! I would also like to get this on the Popular Reel, mainly because, quite frankly this has some good info (I AM NOT A NOOB, I DONT CARE ABOUT XP!)

So without further ado, I will go ahead with MY knowledge, and IF you want, comment on YOUR experience for running a great server.

Before we begin, DO NOT ask for my servers IP, I WILL NOT GIVE IT TOO YOU! (Well... Maybe)

Okay, here we go:

Number one, do not run a server without a good computer, your computer stinks, then your players will cry themselves to sleep! Having a great server depends mainly on connection, a friend of mine started a server in 1.8, but we decided to always (almost) use my server because his computer frequently crashes ;(
Number two, RUN BUKKIT! I cannot stress this enough, if bukkit is updated, USE IT! They provide many great tools for server hosters and even the players. Currently, my server is run-of-the-mill survival. I do however use SpawnControl, which is a great spawn changing tool. I also use Lockette, which is great for those shy (I have a couple) players, who are always scared of thieves, (But we don't have that problem) Probably the BEST tool to have is world edit, since there aren't many big builds, we use world edit for undoing the occasional griefing problems, (but we don't have much of that)
Number three, have a great OP, don't recruit any players, get to know them and trust them. Don't just say" Hi! Want to be op? *Dorky Grin*" These players will usually just boss others around with the threat of "I WILL BAN YOU, OR WORSER!" So get to know your OPS-in-training. Also, just straight up ban new players that start the game with, "Can I's Be OP?" They are most likely grievers who are Noobs! And players like that will make you sad..
Number four, find a good place to spawn, most likely, I would encourage hosts to protect a spawn area, mainly because when players join, they don't want to look at half destroyed landscapes (Its not pretty). Also find a great seed, I would consider using a large forest seed (None have come to mind)
Number five, try and survive with the players, its NOT fun to have an admin in diamond armor flying around players just watching them build, I try and just survive, a good way to do this is NOT have OP status after you set up the server and spawn and stuff like that.
Number six, HAVE FUN, do NOT rage quit if you run a survival/pvp server and get killed by someone. Do NOT ban someone just because you have the power to do it. It makes people sad, what if you were playing and someone, who you thought was a regular player banned you for killing them IN PVP FOR CRYING OUT LOUD! You would probably (Probably) cry yourself to sleep, (No offense)

Well, thats about it, so I hope that you use this advice/guide to making a great server! Next week/Today I hope to get out a "A Guide To Playing On A Server"

Remember, this took some time to type, so please give the recognition I deserve (I know most of you will just read this and run though)

I also hope this makes the popular reel so this shows everyone great ideas/advice for running a server!

Thanks again, and I hope this helps!

Peace Out! (Not a pacifist)

What type of computer is suggested for bukkit? (On an old computer from perhaps two/three years ago I downloaded it and didn't do anything. The next day my computer was as slow as a snail in molasses.)

Well, I run a fairly new computer, A Mac OSX with a default amount of 4GB, but it is upgraded to about 160GB. So I have no trouble with running a server, of course, my server is private. So I don't have more than 30 people on at a time. This takes up around 1GB, but I would personally say that you would probably want to find out how much memory you have. That would depend on if you could successfully run a server, it would also determine how many people you want on. If you can tell me these things, it would make it easier on my part to tell you the problem.

There is 1 thing I want to ask, what exactly is bukkit? I just don't usually run servers that much...

Where to start... Hmm... Well, its an advanced program (but EASY too use) that can run a minecraft server. It can run things called plugins that make the game more... enjoyable... It adds new features, that can change the gameplay. Since my server is mainly survival aimed, I use plugins for anti-griefing and apple tree (giving the ability to plant apple trees). If your server is a role-play server, get faction plugins, adding the ability to make a party. You might also get shops plugins for those huge cities of yours! The possibilities are pretty much endless with bukkit. If you want more info, visit here:

Hope this helps!

Another plugin I would advise people to get is... Worldguard! It allows you to disable features such as creeper explosions and also protect areas. I highly reccommend it along with a few other classic plugins that every half decent server seems to have:
o permissions
o groupmanager
o essentials
o mob disguise (just if you want some fun)

Hope this helped, great advice btw.
