Thought I'd make a quick little blog/guide/tutorial on how I shade most of my skins.

Start with make a simple colored base for whatever skin you're making. I chose to make some kind of suit, and I used the chest part for this tutorial. Pick a neutral color for all parts, not too bright, not too dark (you want to add both shading and highlights).

bepng

As you can see I built a little palette to the right. I'm not going to go through how I build the palette here, maybe in another blog. At the green dot you can find the base color, the same color that the suit is right now. I'm not going to shade with that one, but it's there to show a nice transition from the shades.

At the orange dots you can find something that I will now call "soft shades", they aren't much darker/brighter than the base color.

At the red dots you can find the "hard shades". They are quite much darker/brighter than the base color. I'll now go through how I use these.

These are meant to be used with a low-transparency pencil.

The first shade I use is the dark soft shade. I draw out a quite basic shade where I think it looks good. This will give me a bit of a guideline and start.

bflApng

Then I do pretty much the same, but with the brighter of the soft shades.

hXesUpng

Now I go back to the darker shading again by using the darkest hard shade, I add the shade to the darkest areas of where I added the darker soft shade. It really adds some depth and contrast to the shading.

OzVdpng

The last step is simply to add the brightest highlights. These are a bit optional. Sometimes you can be just fine by using the soft shade for them. It all depends on what you're making, and what look you're after. I personally love high contrast, so I decided to go for it here.

wsIMpng

And that's pretty much it. For every part of a skin I don't tend to do much more than this.

Hope it helped! :)

Please give a diamond if you think it's nice, a favorite if you really like it and a subscribe if you want to stay updated with my work. :)

This all makes sense, great tutorial, but how do you know where the shading goes?

Just imagine what parts should realistically be brighter than others. Practice helps too I suppose. :p
Ok! Your skins inspire me, Leostereo. xD

Basically you shade the skin very softly first as a guideline, then add more contrast to give it realism.

I didn't have time to read it all, I bookmarked it, and subbed. I NEVER would of thought of using a transparent pencil!
Why isn't there a tutorial to any other part of the body :(

Natural shading! where would you think that the natural shades would be?? if there is a beard you put a dark shade below it to show that the beard is placed over the shirt

This is a very good technique. I will be trying this soon ^^
This really actually doesn't help much, I know it's a tutorial on how 'you' shade your skins but if you make a tutorial it should at least be worthwhile reading. You don't actually really show us at all, you just say 'I start with a basic shade here, and then here.'
How's this supposed to help an average beginner?

This is not where to shade, but what technique you could use for shading.
I don't really find it as a technique, it just looks like you shaded step by step and made huge jumps each time in which I couldn't even follow on to.

Hey Leo. Please don't ignore this. I'd like you to make a skin of this: http://www.planetminecraft.com/skin/underwater-hannibal/ IT's my skin. But I give you full perms to make it better. And then make a blog and send it to me on how I could make it better. You can change the features. And upload it. I just wanna see what it would look like with a pro shaders skill

Then you only use darker shades, or you make the base color darker and use white for the highlights.

Try focusing more on the layout of the skin, make the sides fit better together. Also see if you could use the 3D layer for (some of) the hair.
