Introduction
I wrote a rant a while back about my feelings about how downhill the Minecraft multiplayer community is going. I talked about how all servers are these days are:
HARDCORE FACTIONS
or,
MULTI-HUB-CRAFT
All we see these days are terribly made and designed servers that actually make me want to physically vomit. It is a disgrace! I mean how can people release these servers to the public and feel satisfied?
What has happened to ranks?
I remember when I could join a server and there would maybe be a couple Moderators an Admin and occasionally you saw an Owner.
These days servers have an owner, I personally hate the rank I think its for obnoxious people who need to feel empowered for some reason, Co-Owner's; what the heck is with that? Okay, sure, have a co-owner (could just make them Admin) but when I join a server and see 3-5 co-owners. If we look at the definition of Co-Owner (from google: i.imgur.com/fp92az7.png) it is seen that a co-ownership is between two people of equal stance.
The worst part about the Owner rank is not just that is exists, its that they feel the need to abuse colours and magic text. I sometimes see my chat ebing cut off by someone with an underline in their name. Chat is the main/only way to communicate in the game. Why would you want to obstruct it or make it look unappealing.
When I join a server I don't want to feel overwhelmed by a flashing rainbow. I want to feel like I can actually read the chat without having to squint, but maybe that's just me.
Nicknames
As a player, when I have a problem, I usually need to seek the help of a staff member. Sometimes I need to message them or send them a teleport request. Now I ask you this: how can I send a message to someone when I don't even know their actual in-game name because their nickname is so vastly different from the real one.
It's confusing! It's just downright confusing! I mean, if someone doesn't like their username, can't they just change it now?
"But what if they did change it, and just want fancy formatting" well then that creates the problem of their name being incredibly difficult to read. (e.g. i.imgur.com/BQf3FO0.png) I'm sorry but you cannot tell me that is easy to read. Don't even get me started on that servers ranking system... It makes no sense, and the formatting is very badly done.
Welcoming
I'm not going to lie, it's nice to be welcomed, or welcomed back to a server, but that can clog up chat and make it difficult to read.
^That is half of the chat I was spammed with after joining back for a total of 10 (ish) seconds.
I mean come one, really? A server with a rule against spamming and all it does is clog up it's own chat? That's just hypocritical.
Finally
I could go on, believe me I could, but I feel this has reached more than adequate length, and if you have actually read this far then I both congratulate and thank you.
I realize that a lot of this post is just my own opinion and just as I am allowed to voice mine, you can do the same, I am happy to read all replies about your opinions on the current state of servers and maybe you could share your own that has good design and a logical ranking system with original things.
Bonus!
Things I would have liked to have covered but didnt think they would be read:
- Unoriginality (servers that just download permissions files or maps)
- Bad ranking systems
- Terrible spawn flow
- Bad continuity (between plugins)
- Putting server's in the wrong category
If you think I should write more, let me know

Anyways, onto the main content, I believe the reason why people make Faction servers and Hub servers, is because it's what the owners themselves like to play. Keep in mind that they are, despite popular belief, humans, and players of Minecraft as well. They all begin with a small idea, or ideology that they think would bring a new experience to the game, as succesful as they may be. As for hub servers especially, they are usually a result of a smaller server expanding, splitting their worlds into different server instances to use computer resources more efficiently (CPU cores come to mind), thus creating a hub server.
As for a division of staff ranks, I too would agree that there is often too much gauding of one's power, especially in many of the "upper-ranks" of staff, with the co-owners and whatnot. Honestly, I'd agree with you competely on that point- why have a co-owner rank, and an owner rank, if they have the exact same permissions? That said, I believe in having a sort of "trial" staff rank, before moderator, or so, to test whether or not whoever was just added to the staff team is truly a good addition or not.
I wholeheartedly despise servers that are unoriginal, copying off another server's success, or using solely public resources and claiming it as your own, in my view, is a terrible thing to do.
Final last word from me, in the form of a question. of sorts: I'm interested in what you have to say about bad plugin continuinity, as in some deveoppers dropping support for their plugin?
I am making a new server soon and I love seeing opinions like this get out there so I can make it the best it can be for players. :P
Also, servers where you spawn on an open platform are horrible. As a player it leaves you confused on which direction to go. A spawn with a good flow that takes you slowly round introductory signs and messages is good. I think for something like this there should also be an option for players to skip it.
Another thing I find extremely annoying is an entire spawn maze where every which way you turn is more rules. To solve this.. I will put 5-10 most important rules down then have a /rules command for an extra list in case anyone is confused about what goes under the category of 'common sense'.
If you're going to take all of this into account I'm sure you'll make a very good and popular server and please let me know when you release it.
there do exist plugins you can do ./wecome {playername} and it spams only the player. I personnally like it if we all welcome eachother
underlining is a bad thing with the chat but colors are ok
The welcoming section was more aimed at... For example, that auction system witch filled my chat. I agree, welcomes are nice.
