This is a Documentary Segment of the First 2.1 Million blocks (or 0.1% of total) placed in Project 1845. Highlighting major milestones of the project. You can see more information about the project at the website atwww.project1845.com or visit the PMC project profile here.

Notch Had A Dream

Yes, this story starts at Notch, the creator of what we call Minecraft today. While working for ZAM gaming network I first heard of Minecraft though a work colleague that did a show of Minecraft in Alpha, he does the BFF report atzam.com. I checked out the website and took away two main messages "Unlimited Potential to create" and "Lego for Grownups minus the mess" When i was younger i loved Lego, always trying to build towers that would reach from the lounge room floor to solidly touch the ceiling.

My First Singleplayer

Spending 7 years playing MMO games didn't prepare me for my first true experience into the voxel and sandbox genre of gaming. I literally spent 3 weeks trying to figure out the game, wondering why i cant find any iron and what these stone blocks with brownish colors that took forever to dig up with wooden tools were (yes, i know). I finally stumbled across minecraftwiki and since being paid to make game wikis I did my research and almost knew how almost everything interacts and how to do things. I then wanted to try out this "Unlimited Potential" that kept bouncing in my eardrums.
So to mcserverlist I went and found my first server, which I am still with to this very day.

Mojang Visits

About 5 months later C418 Visits our server and at the time I had several projects almost completed. Which included the Hanging gardens, a 5,000m long grand canyon and the 16 sided pyramid plus more. He tweeted it was the "most impressive architecture I've ever seen" which i wasnt pleased about. Don't take it wrong, I know its a great honor to have someone from Mojang visits your server and even better to receive such an awesome recommendation. But those projects didn't take too much patience, creativity or stamina. All were small enough that it was easily to check out and move on, not really applicable to be called "using Unlimited Potential" so I decided there and then. My next project WILL use Unlimited Potential at a scale that could be big enough to be called "using" it.

One Crazy Man, One "Crazy" Dream

It began around July10th 2011 to see what unique project could i build. A palace? nope, too small. Another game's game map. I only played MMO's so a game map just would've been too big. I didn't want to do a small scale model since that would be cheating myself. But to have the stamina and patience for a project it must be a topic I'm passionate about and have easy access to resources. After some careful calculating and some youtube searching. a world-first 1:1 scale replica of the entire Forbidden City was decided upon; and just to up the stakes, lets make it 100% legit.

3 Months Down, Too Easy.

So, 3 months into the project, more than 1 million blocks placed and lo and behold Minecraft Mondays does a piece showcasing the project. The attention started turning to the project with tourists coming to visit every day. At one point we were having 20 tourists at a time to the project. It was a huge milestone and a huge success. But something started to irritate me. It seemed too easy. The work itself was hard, and everyone including the server regulars who help out on a daily basis did such a fantastic job, i couldn't have done it without them. But, once the project is done, i get an ounce of self-worth of doing something unique and big, but then what? the tourists come, awe and then go after a few weeks. Nothing permanent sticks in cyberspace. Or can I make something memorable.
I came to realize that even with a 880 x 2660 sized Forbidden City replica. I wasn't using enough of that Potential to call it "used"

When One "Crazy" Dream Becomes "WTF Are You Thinking!"

I live in Beijing at the moment so I have access to resources that not many players have access to. One day of several I went to the national archives here in Beijing. Now, just so you know, the Chinese love their paperwork and they got paperwork dating back centuries to say the least. I came across a resource that will change the future of my Minecraft future. Back in 1845AD the Qing Dynasty organised a city map to be created a 650:1 scale map which if laid out would've been 20meters by 15 meters in size. What's interesting is the layout they chose. Not only is the map showing all roads but also what the front of each building looked like; And I have direct access to a copy to it :D
Because of the time I spent in China, I knew with this resource i could replicate it to within a good accurate degree and so I thought "I'm so gonna do it" ignoring that little sane voice in my head saying "WTF are you thinking!"
I started researching and collecting resources on Chinese Architecture and started to do the maths. I would be building a 10,000 x 10,000 block sized map at 1:1 scale. Doing it 100% legit would take me at LEAST 95 years. so Doing it with spawned items is the only option to completing it.

Project 1845 Is Born

Continuing with building the Forbidden City has Phase 1 and 100% legit I started researching, we would end up placing 2.1 Billion blocks by the time the entire project is completed with only a small amount of 2.9 - 3.3 Million blocks used in the Forbidden City Phase. The deadline was set for completion on 20th December 2014. Matching up with when I complete my third year of Tertiary Studies when I return to New Zealand at the start of 2012.

Project 1845 is Moved

So this project did start on the main map on the public server I play on, while it can fit while in Phase 1, it cannot fit once all 5 phases are completed. so It was moved to its own map. We got the Cleanroom generator to give us a flat and lowered map. We used MCEdit to move the entire project (880 x 2660) to the 0,0 coordinate and then lower it down to level 6 of the map. Which with the local computer, it took 3 hours to process it all. Well Done MCEdit! you almost went thermonuclear. The project now resides in its own special map accessible by a warp sign at the main map spawn.

1.8 and Notch-Supplied Beijing Smog

1.8 was a curse and a godsend for the project. It supplied the much needed Stone bricks, iron bars and red brick stairs. It destroyed our entire concept of lighting effects. Because our map was around the level of bedrock on a standard map, there was floating black particles, or as I call it Authentic Notch-Supplied Beijing Smog. Luckily we have our in-house plugin developer Maczydeco to create a special C script to raise the entire map up 40 blocks to fix our lighting woes.

A World Record?

If we complete the project it will become a Guinness world record. These are the criteria the project is needed to achieve for it to be a legitimate record.
  • 1:1 Scale (well yeah, self-explanatory)
  • Replica of something that has or is existing in reality (existed back in 1845 with historical records as proof)
  • User-made (sorry but Mojang employees aren't allowed to help)
  • A Single Completed Project (In this case Beijing City)
  • Built inside a game that applies to the Sandbox Game Genre.

When the project is completed, the plan is for it to be submitted as the largest 1:1 scale replica ever built in the Sandbox Game Genre.

Beyond Default

I have been building the project to make it be graphically close to what it looks like in real life but after several weeks I realised this wouldnt be close enough to accurate as I want it to be, I dont want it accurate down to the nearest block, But I want it accurate down to the nearest pixel. So i looked around and found nothing, the closest texture packs around out there are either japanese/korean based and definetly not going to work well with the project so I decided to make my own. Before this point in time I never touched texture packs, I tried at most 4 over 5 months but 99% of the time I stuck with default; let alone creating my own.
Easy to find resources on how to build one? Absolutely none.
Easy to find resources on how to edit one? Absolutely none.
So here I was with an idea to create a texture pack, no clue what I needed or what to do. So i decided to hunt down the default texture pack from inside the client, which I did and over the space of a few hours and a copy of Adobe Fireworks I had edited the name, pack logo and bookshelves.
Luckily over the past 2 weeks of editing I have been able to learn to make the Authentic Chinese texture pack which gives greater immersion effect for anyone wanting to experience an authentic Chinese roleplay experience. Click here for Texture Pack and it has reached over 1,200 downloads before its Version 1.0 release on the 23rd of September. I just want to thank the community right now for their gracious support of this texture pack, its been a great experience and I will keep updating it for many years to come.

Videos & Minecraft Mondays Show

I also am a first-timer video maker. I made this youtube video (Here) and it gots a few hits, nothing fantastic since it was very poor quality, but hey, what u expect from your first game recording heh? The second one was a big hit though with at the time of writing this with over 3,000 times watched celebrating our 1 millionth block placed (Click Here)
This attracted the attention of some big players in the community review scene and Minecraft Mondays presenter Bebopvox wanted to showcase some of my material as server of the week. This was then shown on their Episode 22 (Click Here)
A few weeks later I was inspired by the STA Travel Australia adverts "Eat" "Move" and "Learn" I have started developing my next videos with showcase the project but also the three pinnacles of what makes Minecraft Minecraft "Gather" "Build" and "Discover". I have already completed part 2 as "Build" (Click Here) and soon hope to complete the others.

Its Own .Com

When I got confirmed that this project is eligible for a world record I decided to step up the officalness up a tier and get a proper url website for the project, At the moment it doesn't have much in it but eventually will be a resource for not only project 1845 material but material and resources to help anyone that wish to build their own Chinese architecture. It is now at www.project1845.com

Phase One In Progress

Project 1845 is split up into five phases. Phase one is currently in development and has been a bumpy ride. Approximately 4.5 Million blocks required but is built 100% legit this is the Forbidden City section of the project. This section is 100% legit construction with no spawned items or WorldEdit done to it since it is the most important part and is the heart and soul of the entire project with 100% attention to detail. At the time of writing this we are nearing 50% completed after 70 days of construction but now with popularity of the project increasing it is being completed faster with more people willing to help gather materials and skilled and trained builders to help with the construction.

0.1% Completed. Now What?

Well, Forbidden City phase is nearing the half way mark in constrcuction and popularity of the project is gaining steadly. I now personally take two days a week of admin'ing the server to focus purely on construction of the project. 0.1% done in 70 days may mean 2 years to reach 1% or 200 years to reach 100% but phase one is the longest phase due to being built 100% legit and will be a clearly definable part of the city. We hope to complete phase one by Minecon.

If you wish to help build or help support and promote this monumental project with youtube video tours or reviews please private message me here and I'll help you as best I can.

I Love it, I truly do. However, this seems like a lot of work for something that really seems to have no outside purpose. You guys should link this to some sort of charity to help raise some money for them. I don't want to call this a waste of time, and i know that a World Record is an amazing goal to strive towards, but really you should think about getting some sort of alternative motive to finishing the project. Like i said, building this for a charity would be an incredibly idea. I have worked with charities before, and I still do, they would have no problem with supporting you.

Well there is a good outside purpose for me. I live in Beijing and know next to no Chinese. I have been having trouble learning the language but I have been learning faster with this project as not only am I learning how to build them but also the buildings names, place names and history behind it e.t.c. Learning Chinese vocabulary, grammar and pronunciations have improved and a lot faster while on this project.
