You are walking in your world and then you meet a strange guy and he asks you to do something for him what leads to an amazing adventure with a lot of secrets and a handful of surprises. It’s an example of the well loved and amazing maps we all love to play and see on youtube.

An adventure map!

But what makes an adventure map so good and which parts of an adventure map are important to make it a good one?

What is an adventure map?
At this point there are a lot of maps on PMC etc, but are all of those maps really adventure maps? Well I don’t think so, because Maps like the Dropper, Parcour maps and Puzzle maps aren’t adventures at all (as long as there is no actual story). An adventure map does contain an story. You’ll meet characters or animals who are telling you what you need to do to get further in the map itself. Some examples of these kind of maps are: Herobrines Mansion, Toy Story and The lost Potato.

Most of these maps present an evilness in your world which you’ll have to defeat, but first It’ll give you a lot of tasks before getting you somewhere near your destiny in this story.

But why are these maps so addicting?
Because you do put a goal inside of the game which Minecraft itself hasn’t. Yeah of course you can see the Enderdragon as an endgoal, but still after you have majestically slayed the lord of the Minecraft universe, you’ll still return to your own world being told that the dragon was some kind of dream and that your journey hasn’t ended yet. Besides, in the new 1.9 update you’ll get the chance to respawn the dragon and kill him again, and again, and again and… you get my point.

An adventure map really does have an ending, sometimes it’s still an open ending but you’ll get an idea of being succesful in something, You reached the end of an amazing adventure and now you can finally rest until a new part comes out. (like the never-ending story of the lost freaking potato…)

It’s an amazing feeling which Minecraft itself never will get by itself and most of the other games have. The Arkham games and Assassins Creed games all do have a story which will let you explore everything and every achievement stimulates you to keep on playing.
so that’s why Adventure maps are so addicting for us.

So now there rest us one tiny last question;

What do we need for a good adventure map?
There are 2 or maybe 3 things that are highly necessary in making an amazing adventure map. These things are:

An amazing story:
Of course, this is the most obvious one in this list. A good story makes a good adventure, without a story there isn’t even an adventure at all.
A story should have surprises, a lot of action like fights but also real thinking subjects for the intelligent people and use parkour etc to make it more interesting to play. Let the people interact with other characters in your maps and let them think that they really have a connection with them in your story. play with emotions to keep it amazing as you intended it to be.

An amazing map:
The buildings are at least 50% of your whole experience in your adventure. Most maps which had ugly buildings did not become very big at al (with a few exceptions). Your map has to be interesting and must contain a lot of details. It isn’t necessary that it has to be build by a professional builder, but at least try to create a nice map instead of using the npc villages ect that most people nowadays use.

An original concept:
Be creative in your Idea. I mean, everybody knows the stories of Herobrine and everyone has wandered thru forests in medieval lands. Even the Zombie apocalyps maps are overrated these days. Try to create a new story in another time. Find your inspirations in legends and myths of our world banditry to remodel them to something you like. Use all of your creativity and be the one who makes the best adventure map the Minecraft community has ever seen.

So this is all I can tell you by now about adventure maps. I hope you guys liked it and I hope you guys got some inspiration out of this. Well at least I did, so I am gonna work on my own adventure map right know, and who knows? maybe you will play it some day.

Greetings,
DuncanBuilder
