Ageism, you've probably heard that term somewhere and if you haven't, congratz to you. Ageism according to most is discrimination of a person because of their age. It's most heard of when it comes to applying for participation in something or an application for something of higher rank (such as staff on a server). Usually these applications require a person to input their age, and this is where the problem begins*.

*I am not here to support or not support ageism. This is simply an explanatory blog stating the facts.

Ageism happens because of the general way certain age groups behave. If you have a younger sibling, they are most likely more immature than you. And when it comes to responsibility-needing jobs such as staff on servers, people aren't that excited in adding someone from an age group that usually generates irresponsible people. With age comes wisdom and experience, which makes people put more trust in them. The term attributes more toward tween gamers to older teen gamers and not as much toward adults (everyone has already matured and such). Ageism has brought much hate from the younger Minecraft community as they always think they're being discriminated based on how many years they've been living on this planet. Another component to ageism is one's voice. Whether it be a first time Skype conversation or a large TeamSpeak meeting, people can get annoyed by high pitched voices. It's in our DNA, for example, us humans find loud, squeaky noises like styrofoam rubbing against each other or nails scratching a board pretty piercing and annoying. People aren't just annoyed at younger people's voices just because, but since it's how our brains have been wired for ages.

You may feel left out because you're younger, but don't worry, your time will come. Striving for positions you know you probably won't get at this stage will just make you feel more depressed and your lower your self esteem. Be patient and in a couple of years you'll be wanted by every single server that needs staff. Occasionally you might find yourself in a lucky spot and actually get accepted by whatever you applied for. If your claim is you are more mature than others, are you really? Or are you purposely trying to be more mature just because you want the job? The bottom line is this: Be yourself, your time will always come, but it doesn't have to be now.

Obviously, you've seen younger people, whether your siblings or random kids at the park, who are less mature than you or are just right out annoying. But remember, there are sometimes those diamonds near bedrock, there are these younger people who are still responsible and smart enough for success. Most younger players want staff or other positions more than older players, and usually they work harder as staff than others. You just have to pick the right people to do it for you. If you find those kids, they can be a good helper for your server as they will be able to relate to most players and will probably work harder than other staff.

Good blog! ;)

I agree with a lot of the comments below, age doesn't really matter. But it's true that older audiences are usually more wise and talented.

Age? 12. xP

The younger players think that being staff means that you can abuse the members of a server. I'm 14, and am insulted by the demographic that's being portrayed for my age group. Believe me, I've been staff on a few servers and have had to deal with a few co-staff members gone rogue.

completely true hawk,

things that are important in life are, experience, and the will to want something.

irl and ig i have seen 8 years old who are sometimes more active and good-helping then 15 year old people.

even maturity doesn't have to be so really important. younger kids as people define it, they might be not so good in taking responsibility, but in some cases its better to be blind for that, so you can look at the things they CAN do.

seriaus, maturity doesn't really matter for me, not even the high voices of little kids and all... no, personality. for me its the most important thing when i am having contact with other people.

(again i cant find proper words to explain it on my best but okay:P i know your used to that, and don't blame me for my English as you know... its not my first language. i am doing my best at least)

I think the root of the problem is wanting staff so freaking bad. What is it about a staff position that is so desirable? Seriously, it's nowhere near as fun as it actually is. If people would stop striving for staff so much then maybe age discrimination in this genre wouldn't be an issue.

Agreed. People, especially younger players, apply because they want the authority and prestige and they'll keep trying to be staff because they don't know how hard it really is, so they'll always be discriminated against

Maturity and skill speak louder than any number ever will. Learn this, and you can succeed in anything.
