An in-depth analysis of PMC Popularity/Fame
Greetings fellow PMCers. This is the first blog of a planned series of thoughtful blogs for the intellectual mind, designed to get you thinking.
We see here and there (really everywhere), mentionings of this belief of popularity/fame here on PMC. I believe however, that popularity/fame on this website does not actually exist, or at least in the way that you think it does. We all display ourselves here as a username with a picture, which isn’t really us, it is really just a name on a screen through which we display our work. So can someone be truly popular or famous if all their fans know them as just a word on a screen?
Here’s an analogy to help you see my point. We all know of famous buildings and structures such as the golden gate bridge or the Sydney Opera House. But do you know who made those? Nope. I sure don’t, and the average Joe doesn’t know either. So, just as these architects aren’t known for who they are (or really at all) except for their works, every PMCer isn’t really known, just their works and a made up name attached them are known.
Popularity however, is objective, so who am I to say who is or is not popular? How many people have to know and admire you before you become popular or famous? This is really decided by the individual. If you meet your own requirements of what popular or famous means to you then hey, you’re popular.
….Or, is it the other way around? Are you popular or famous only if OTHERS perceive you as such? And what if then you don’t meet your own requirements for the title others give you?
As you can see, popularity or fame is more complex than you originally thought. So next time you see some level 60+ on this website, think to yourself, “Are they truly popular, merely perceived as popular, or are they an orange?”
Thank you for reading! I hope I’ve got your head spinning, stay tuned for more thought provoking blogs. Next topic, our perceived reality and the egocentric predicament.
