This was a long time coming. As an Undertale fangirl, it is my clearly established responsibility to share my thoughts on the topic. And so, this came into existence. (Please keep in mind that this is all theory work. I do not have ironclad evidence, but it does make sense, at least to me.) This theory has spoilers for the Neutral, True Pacifist, and Genocide Routes, so consider yourself warned.

Chara is the game's narrator, and she was 'summoned' in Frisk's initial "fight" with Flowey.

At the start of the game, Frisk is spawned in a patch of the golden flowers that appear at various points throughout the game. You can walk around and press Z indefinitely, but no text will ever appear. Then, if when you go to the next room and get a fight with Flowey, the fallen human's name doesn't appear in the bottom left like it usually does. Obviously, the whole battle mechanics with Flowey are different, and so this isn't evidence enough. But if you return to the first room after fighting Flowey and press Z next to the flower bed, text will appear saying (Golden flowers.) At any other fight during the game, the fallen human's name will be in the bottom left of the fight screen, too. Furthermore, after you beat the game and you're back on the title screen and Flowey is giving his whole spiel on how you're the only one who can reset, he calls you Chara. At the end of his lecture, Flowey says, "See you later, Chara." Even if this section doesn't coincide with the timeline of the rest of the game, I think it still counts as evidence enough. Finally, perhaps the most important piece of evidence for this is what happens when you press Z in front of a mirror. In Neutral/Pacifist, text will appear saying (It's you.) But in Genocide Route, in which Flowey clearly establishes you as Chara, not Frisk, the text says (It's me.) Furthermore, I think it's safe to say that Frisk absorbed Chara's SOUL in her fight with Flowey. Most of the evidence for this comes in Genocide, but it's, in my opinion at least, only a step away from canon. In the room after your fight with Toriel, when you meet Flowey again, he says:

"Hahaha...
You're not really human, are you?
No. You're empty inside. Just like me. In fact...
You're Chara, right?
We're still inseparable, after all these years...
Listen. I have a plan to become all powerful.
Even more powerful than you and your stolen soul."

Obviously, this text establishes that Chara absorbed Frisk's SOUL rather then the other way around. However, I think it's reasonable that in Neutral and Pacifist, the opposite is true. To begin with, the LOVE you gain when fighting monsters isn't yours. It's Chara's. This is obviously up to interpretation, but in my opinion the fact that your LOVE is displayed in battles right next to the name of the fallen human's isn't insignificant. Since LOVE is the Undertale equivalent of levels, Chara becomes stronger then Frisk, gaining so much EXP in Genocide that she pushes Frisk aside and absorbs their . However, since this is up to interpretation and not ironclad fact, there's more evidence in, surprisingly enough, the Neutral Route. Right after your fight with Asgore, Flowey absorbs the six human souls. He then says:

"Boy!
I've been empty for so long...
It feels great to have a SOUL inside me again.
Mmm, I can feel them wriggling...
Aw, you're feeling left out, aren't you?
Well, that's just perfect.
After all, I only have six souls."

However, since Flowey and Asriel are the same being, Flowey should already have one soul. Chara's. According to old VHS tapes that Alphys has in the True Lab, which she evidently got from the castle, Chara and Asriel hatched a plan to break the barrier and free the monsters. This plan involved Chara poisoning hersef with buttercups, Asriel absorbing her soul, breaking through the barrier, and gathering six more human souls. However, Asriel was attacked by the humans and died himself, getting reincarnated as a flower. So then what happened to Chara's soul? It just wandered up to the surface and followed Frisk around until she fell down Mt. Ebott? At the very least, it should have stuck by Flowey, otherwise her SOUL would have no way of possessing Frisk in Genocide. So why couldn't Flowey absorb her soul? Wasn't that Chara's plan all along? Unless Chara's SOUL was safely stored within Frisk, Flowey would absorb Chara's SOUL along with the other six human souls and become a god.

So, what are your thoughts/opinions? Do you have anything to add, or proof that I'm wrong? Drop a comment! I'm interested in what you all have to say about it.

Why are you misgendering Frisk and Chara. THEY are not girls. THEY are non binary. This is erasure of non binary people and non binary representation.
