Hello everyone, AnimeFanFTW here, back again with another game review, and today, I reviewed the indie game that has taken Steam users by storm, Stardew Valley!

In my previous blog, I mentioned that I was taking a little break from blogging, and Stardew Valley was one of the reasons why. I figured it's been a bit too long since I last reviewed a game, and so, I decided to review Stardew Valley.

But before we start, I want to point out that I have now been on PlanetMinecraft for 3 years now! 3 entire years have passed since I made my profile, and man, these 3 years have been fantastic. I've met so many amazing people, and I've made lots of friends along the way. Starting out with horrible and cringy maps and skins, I've grown into quite the person I am today. I have so many people enjoy my content, and although I'm uncertain when I will one day leave this site, I know that I will gladly continue to be a part of this community for years to come. So thank you to everyone for the past 3 years. Here's to another year of bad content by me! :D

Now, hope you enjoy the review! ;3
WARNING, PAST THIS POINT CONTAINS SPOILERS. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.

Introduction and Facts
During my times of being homeless, I lived out on a friend's farm for almost a year. And man, was it tiring. Having to feed the cows and the chickens, grow crops, clean the fields, and so on. It was not my cup of tea, due to the fact that I'm allergic to work. And I'm sure alot of people on this site also hate work. But even then, games that task you to take care of a farm is strangely fun and relaxing. The feeling of living a country life, making a living for yourself, and taking care of livestock, in a videogame, can be really fun. And Harvest Moon is one of the most popular of those types of games. Although I have never played a Harvest Moon game, I can see why people love it. So it came to everyone's surprise that in early 2016, one lone developer released onto Steam, Stardew Valley. A game that takes massive inspiration from the Harvest Moon series, and received an overwhelming positive response by critics. Crazy to think that a game would get so much positive response, considering only 1 person made the whole game. Which is really impressive when you think about it.

Story - 8/10
AnimeFan Game Reviews - Stardew Valley (3 Year Anniversary!)
In terms of story, it's simplistic, in a good way. The game starts out with you, near your dying grandpa in a bed. Well then. That escalated quickly. Your grandpa gives you an envelope, saying to only open it when the burden of modern life is too much. Many years later, we see our character working at a place called JojaMart, a corrupt supermarket business. Our character has now been burdened by modern life, and opens the envelope. It turns out the letter contained a deed to grandpa's farm, located in Stardew Valley. So our character packs his/her bags, and sets off to Stardew Valley. Once making it, they met Robin, the local carpenter, who offers to take us to the farm. Upon reaching the farm, it becomes apparent that the farm is an absolute mess. After meeting with Mayor Lewis, and after a quick nap, we receive tools and some parsnip seeds to start our farm. And that's basically the story. Any other events from this point are all dependent of the player. Now, I think the story, although not really important, is really great. It's simple, and the story events after the beginning cut scene are all based on what you do in the game. If you don't really care about the story, then you can just start a farm, and not worry about it. But if you do want to see some story, then that means exploring, and meeting the people of Stardew Valley. This means the pace can be tailored to whatever speed you want. Some of the most important story parts in the game, involve the Community Centre, in where you are eventually tasked with repairing it, to meeting characters and forming friendships, which I will go over shortly. Overall, the story of Stardew Valley is very simple, and effective.

Characters - 8/10
AnimeFan Game Reviews - Stardew Valley (3 Year Anniversary!)
The characters of Stardew Valley are very interesting, and play an important role of the game. We have the previously mentioned Robin, the local carpenter, to Mayor Lewis. But there's alot more people in this game. About over 30 characters. I won't go into too much detail about all of them, but I will explain how these characters are important. You can form friendships with all these people, by gifting them items, and depending on what item they give you, your friendship with them will grow. And the more friendly they are, the more stuff you get. People who are friendly with you will gift you items back, and can also give you cut-scenes with that character depending on the time and location. Not only that, but it's also possible to marry people in the game. Stardew Valley has 5 bachelors and 5 bachelorettes to form a relationship with, and it doesn't matter what gender they are since, since you can also form same-sex marriages in the game as well. Marrying someone will have that person move into your farm, and can help you out in the farm, like water crops, feed animals, fix fences, give you gifts, and so on. And you can even have kids if your relationship is big enough as well. In terms of dialogue, it's great, but does need some variety. After a while, seeing the characters say the same thing over and over again does get boring. But other then that, the characters are very well written, and play a good role in this game.

Also, if anyone is wondering, I married Abigail. She's cute, and has an SNES. How could I not resist? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Gameplay and Controls - 9/10

Daaaaaaamn, this game has so much stuff to do. Well, let's start with the controls. WASD buttons are to move, left mouse click is to use items, right mouse click to pick up items, scroll to cycle through items, and the "e" button to open the inventory screen. Simple and effective. Now, one of the most important aspects to this game is growing crops. To grow crops, you must clear some land, use a hoe to till the ground, plant seeds, and water it daily. After a couple of days, they will grow to a fruit/vegetable, which you can then sell to earn money. You then use said money to buy more seeds, to grow more crops. After a while, your farm will be growing lots of crops. You can also earn money by fishing. Catching fish is an easy way to earn some quick cash. Another thing you can do is go mining in the local mine for some ore and minerals, which can be sold, donated to the local museum, or used for crafting items to help you farm. But there are monsters down the mine, so you can also fight monsters, and get their loot, so you can sell it. You can also cook and make food, if you can get the ingredients. The food can be used to either sell, or be used to replenish your energy meter, which drains slowly everytime you do stuff. Once you can get enough money, you can upgrade your house to make it bigger, upgrade your tools to work faster, or to buy barns and coops, to raise animals, like cows, chickens, ducks, sheep and so on. There is literally alot of things to do. But thankfully, you aren't forced to do any of it. If you so choose, you can ignore some of these things, and just focus on one thing. The game gives you alot of freedom to do whatever you want. The only restriction you have is the time and your energy. If you're up too late past midnight, or you run out of energy, you pass out, and lose money, so when you're low on energy or it's late, simply go to your bed, sleep, and the next day, your energy is back up. One of the best things about this game is discovering alot of secrets this game has to offer. Is there a way to get into the Sewers? How do I talk to this dwarf? Why is there a weird black "void egg" in my coop? What's at the bottom of the mine? Why is there a shrine near my house? There is alot of secrets to uncover and discover in this game, and it's always a treat just exploring the town. The only thing I have a problem with the gameplay is probably the fishing, at the beginning of the game. Fishing at the start of the game is actually pretty difficult, and until you get an upgraded fishing pole, you're out of luck. Luckily, it doesn't ruin much of the game, since the fishing is completely optional. There is so much stuff to do in this game, that I didn't even mention all of it, like festivals, and slime farming, but that's best experienced by playing the game. Overall, gameplay is rich with things to do. It'll be hard getting bored playing this game.

Graphics - 8/10

This game looks really nice. Obviously, it's art style is pixel art, and the pixel art is well done. It reminds me of the visuals of Terraria. Both games had pixel art, and both look really nice. I wouldn't say it looks perfect. Some of the character face sprites look a bit derpy, and in some areas, it looks a bit basic. But there is a ton of detail in the art style. And I can appreciate that.

Sound - 9/10

The soundtrack of this game is so relaxing. Although the music doesn't play all the time, when it does, it always has a relaxing feel to it. So cheerful and vibrant. And not only that, whenever the seasons change, the songs also change to fit the season, which is a very nice touch. Although it isn't Undertale-levels of amazing, it's still a really good and solid soundtrack. The sound effects are also good. So basically, sound is really really great.

Enjoyment - 9/10

We're not even halfway through the year, and already, we have a worthy contender for Indie Game of the Year. This game has earned quite the following so quickly, and the game has so much to offer, for quite a low price. This game should definitely have your undivided attention. But the best part about the game, is that the developer is still adding new stuff to the game. His latest update added more dialogue to characters you marry, and a multiplayer co-op feature has been planned for late-2016. With more content added to this game, and a passionate fanbase that isn't as annoying as other fanbases, I can see this game continue to get popular for years to come. So if you're a fan of the Harvest Moon series, get this game now. If you haven't played a Harvest Moon game before like me, still give this game a go. With so much content all in one little game, don't be surprised if you pull all-nighters playing this game. Trust me. My already horrible sleep schedule has been destroyed by this game.

FINAL VERDICT - 9/10 - Amazing!

Well that's like going to Armaholic, a forum for the ArmA games, and posting a brony fanfiction there, it doesn't fit in, and it's very annoying. Please, make your own website, put the link on your PlanetMinecraft account and boom. Please just stop posting reviews not related to Minecraft and post about Minecraft
