Hello everyone, AnimeFanFTW here, with something I don't normally do. Another game review, and this time, a Nintendo game. And the game is my most favorite Nintendo game ever, Mario and Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story, for the Nintendo DS!

I played this game so many times, and I just really want to talk about how I felt about it. c:

But before we start, we all know the tragic news, of Satoru Iwata, CEO of Nintendo, and game developer who shaped the lives of so many people, passing away at age 55. This is a sad day for the gaming community. :(
So, in tribute to him, I'm going to review what I personally believe is one of Nintendo's greatest games.

RIP Satoru Iwata. Ride that Rainbow Road to heaven.

Now, let's begin!

Introduction and Facts
Mario and Luigi RPG's.
They are amazing hidden gems, and honestly, I'm gobsmacked that the majority of the gaming community doesn't talk about this game series. (They must be too busy talking about MOBA's and Five Nights at Freddy's...) Mario and Luigi Bowser's Inside Story (Or Mario and Luigi RPG 3 in Japan) is a Nintendo DS-only exclusive released in 2009, and was published by Nintendo and developed by AlphaDream, who are best known for making the prequels Superstar Saga and Partners In Time and the sequel, Dream Team. Upon release, the game was praised by almost every critic, with sites like IGN, Metacritic, GameRankings, and more giving the game at least a 9/10 or more. In it's first week available in Japan, it sold 193,000 copies. Not bad for an all ages DS game.

Story and Writing - 10/10
undefined

So here's the story: The Toads have been hit with a disease called the "Blorbs", a disease that causes the Toads to expand like a balloon. A meeting is formed, including Mario, Luigi, Peach, and a young Star Sprite called Starlow. After a while, Boswer, being Bowser, pushes his weight around, and fights Mario. After a tutorial fight, Peach flings Boswer out of the castle. After learning Boswers moves (more on that in a bit), Boswer stumbles across a store, where he randomly won a Vaccum Mushroom. Turns out the shop owner is previous villain in SuperStar Saga (and shop keeper in Partners in Time...yeah...he likes beans...), Fawful, who is behind this. Bowser, vaccuming harder then a wind tunnel, returns to the Mushroom Kingdom and vaccums up the Mario Bros, Peach and everyone else, ending in Bowser fainting. With everyone out of the picture, Fawful plans ahead to take control of the Dark Star, an evil star buried under the kingdom. With it, he hopes for great power. So, it's Mario and Luigi (who are in Bowser's body) and Bowser's job to stop him and to cure the Blorbs. That's the story in a nutshell. And honestly, in its simplicity, it's genius. The story is paced very well, and everything just works. Exploring the wacky world of the Mushroom Kingdom (and Boswer's body...) was always a delight, seeing all the events that happened in the story. I can't really think of any point of the story where I was bored, or thought it needed to be better. Amazing, considering the Mario series is not well known for having a story, outside of "save princess from giant turtle/dinosaur". Not only that, this game has some of the most witty and funniest writing I've ever seen. This game is one of the few games that has literlly left me laughing louder then a kookaburra. The writing is smart, and matches the characters so well, it's astounding. Hiroyuki Kubota (Writer of this game) is a genius. I tip my hat to you, good sir!

Characters - 10/10
undefined

Not surprising, the character department is also handled perfectly. You have the playable characters, Mario and Luigi, and Bowser. Mario is the goofy and serious hero, and Luigi is the clumsy and loveable loser sidekick. Then you have Bowser, the evil, nasty, yet dumb villain. Playing these three, interacting with many people and situations in the game is brillient. They have so much personallity and charm, to the point where you're smiling at everything they say or do. Then you have Princess Peach. It's the usual, helpless damsal in distress. It still works. But then you get to the main antagonist, Fawful. Fawful is AMAZING! He is by far the greatest villain I've ever seen in a video game. First appearing as a side villain in the first RPG, Superstar Saga, Fawful makes this game so appealing to play. Everything he does is evil, yes, but holy bad word, the diologue and actions he does is simply perfection. From things like seeing his plan unfold, to saying something silly like "Easier then bread sandwiches", this guy never seems to not make me smile and laugh. He brings so much life to this game, even more then the main heroes. Other characters include Starlow, the star sprite, who also brings witty diologue to this game, Midbus, Fawful's strong minion, who is basically a rival for Boswer. Every single character has a set role, and they perform that role so well. None of them are a plot device (except Peach, but hey, that's what damsels in distresses do.) and all the characters were likeable. So again, Hiroyuki Kubota, I applaud you.

Gameplay and Controls - 8/10
undefined

In terms of gameplay, it's fantastic. It's a turn-based RPG, where you have your standard stats and levels, different attacks and spacial abilities, HP (health) and MP (spacial attack) meters, and items and equipable items. However, this RPG series has something interesting. See, when you attack in a Mario RPG game, you can increase damage, by pressing the right button at the right time, like right before the attack is about to land. I like this idea, because it adds skill to something that is otherwise classed as strategic. The battle system is so well done, with the boss battles bringing the most fun I've ever had playing a game, being challanging and fun. The various special attacks, unlocked by finding attack pieces, or advancing the story, plays completly different to each other, and requires skill, timing and precision. Playing throught the various levels are equal parts fun and challanging. Not only that, playing as Boswer is different to playing the bros. Unlike the bros, who can jump, Bowser can punch and breathe fire, meaning you must play differently. And although I also like this, this brings me to a problem: the controls. Although using the D-Pad to move for all 3 characters is completly fine, but some time into the game, it adds stylus controls. In some parts, the stylus controls are alright, but it can get frustrating. Shoutout to the nostril minigame. But the biggest problem is that this game has too many tutorials. There is so many stuff to learn, that even near the end of the game, you are still getting taught how to perform certain actions. It gets to the point where it gets annoying, but some tutorials (like the special attack tutorials), you can skip at least. Cause I ain't being taught nothin.

How? On such a small system, how do you get a game to look this amazing? HOW!?!
The sprites on all the characters are brillient, the backgrounds looks flipping amazing, the frames are smooth, the game is so colourful and vibrant, HOW IS IT POSSIBLE ON THE LIMITATIONS OF THE DS!?!
Kouichi Fukazawa (artist of the game), you are a legend. :D

Sound - 10/10

Here we go. This is by far the strongest part in the whole game: the sound. In terms of voice acting, only Mario, Luigi, Bowser and Peach have voices, and they are great, But the music. THE MUSIC. The music is so amazing! From Toad Town's relaxing, quiet tune, to the foot-tapping amazingness that is the boss battle theme, to the epicness and seriousness of the final boss battle, every single song sets the mood to perfection. And we shouldn't be surprised. The composer for this game, Yoko Shimomura, has made music for games like Kingdom Hearts and Street Fighter. Sheeeesh, talk about a resume. whatever music Yoko Shimomura touches, turns to gold. The Mario and Luigi RPG series easily has my favorite video game soundtrack. Crazy, considering, again, this is from an all-ages Nintendo DS game. How?

Enjoyment - 10/10

I've started playing SuperStar Saga. It's amazing so far. I've finished Partners in Time, and that was amazing, and I haven't played Dream Team, but seeing footage on that game, I still think Bowser's Inside Story is not only the best Mario RPG game, but the best Mario game to date. With a few exceptions, this game ticks all the boxes. To repeat myself, I just cannot believe that people don't talk about this game series enough. If you find this game in store, buy it as soon as possible. And play it. You will have a unforgetable experience!

Final Verdict - 10/10: Perfect!

The only part I didn't like was the part with the carrots. I couldn't tap my stylus fast enough :/

Omg, I almost forgot about that!

Another example of stylus controls that were not perfect. The game was too big to focus on, and tapping the carrots was frustrating.
