Evelyn had watched nearly all of her friends fall into the dark waters of Aria Pond, a naturally formed glacier pond in the little hook off of Massachusetts, or what would be known as Massachusetts and as Great Pond in the late future.

Evelyn J'Niqua was orphaned at a very young age. She was taken in by an elderly farmer and his elderly wife in 1329, at the age of seven. She did not know what had happened to her parents, all the farmer would say was that the unnamed king was merciless.

Evelyn gazed into the water, wondering what was down there. She did not know how deep the pond went, or how the pond was made. Legends said that beautiful women and men with tails lived down there, hidden far beyond Evelyn's sight.

But today wasn't a day for Evelyn to enjoy being outside with her toes in the water.

Today was the day for her execution.

Emile had watched dozens of young men and women from Land fall into the water and be transformed into young men and women with tails instead of the two arms that were normally attached to their bottom half. In fact, Emile was one of them.

But Emile did not remember Land at all. She could not recall why the unnamed king had chosen her to explore the frigid waters. She could not recall her sister Evelyn, either.

All that was left of her Land memories were fuzzy images, nothing comprehensible.

"Emile, come join us! We are to welcome a newcomer to Aria soon!" her brother, Alfred called, swimming up to her. Alfred wasn't what one would call handsome, but he certainly knew how to make Emile smile with his silly jokes. His tail was the same brown as the mud below them, as was Emile's.

"Oh, lovely! I hope that they will enjoy it here - hopefully it isn't too chilly for them," Emile giggled, remembering her first day as a siren. Though, she couldn't technically be called a siren, she never used her powers of song to lure sailors in - how could she? There were no sailors near Aria. She knew that Land surrounded her home, there was no ocean to be seen.

"Emile! Alfred! Get your tails over here immediately, the ceremony is about to begin!" their mother, Anne, called, her graceful voice vibrating through the water.

The siblings swam over, nearly crashing into Anne.

They looked up, and saw the Land mermaid fall into the water, their four arms flailing about. Emile was quick to swim up, as was her job, to bring the Land mermaid down to the Priests of Aria. As she caught the Land mermaid in her arms, one of the fuzzy images in her head became clear - Evelyn.

Evelyn gasped into her sister's face, immediately losing any air she had left. She kicked, thinking she must be seeing a hallucination, or even a ghost. Her sister was dead. The farmer had explained that Emile had died along with Alfred, Anne, and Edward.

She got free, and tried to swim up - succeeding. She surprised herself, how was she doing this? No one in the village knew how to swim, and especially not Evelyn.

But then she looked down, and saw her legs being sewn - no, not sewn, her legs were merging together, changing color as they did. She tried screaming, but water filled her lungs as she began to drown. She began to kick her legs-tail-whatever to push herself upwards.

Her feet turned into yellow fins, like that of a fish. Using her arms, Evelyn pushed herself up, reaching for the surface.

Her efforts were useless. She began to drown.

Emile caught her sister again, shaking her head. The sides of Evelyn's neck were already transforming into gills.

Three months later

Evelyn remembered everything. She remembered feeling the autumn leaves crunch under her feet, the feeling of the first winter snow on her tongue. And she missed it.

This made her angry. She didn't want to be down here. She wanted to be up there, playing with the young children of the village. She didn't care that her entire family, except for her father, was down here.

She glanced at the buildings that rose high into the water, and she had a plan.

The mermaids watched in horror as their buildings began to crumble. They could do nothing to stop Evelyn, because she was gone. Evelyn had swam to the surface, and dragged a fallen tree into the water using her newfound strength. Then, she had rammed the tree into the buildings, the home of every single mermaid, and because of the weak stone, the buildings fell.

Everything was gone, all because a single mermaid did not like the water.

Despite her parent's efforts to keep her out of the water, Anastasia waded into it, wearing her scuba uniform. She wanted to see what was in the bottom of Great Pond.

The water quickly covered her head, enveloping her in the darkness. She switched on her flashlight, and kicked up, taking herself down further, and further, and further.

It seemed like the pond went on and on, inviting her to come join it. She accepted the invitation.

In the light of her flashlight, something zoomed by. She gasped, the air in her scuba tank filling her lungs. She shrugged it off, thinking it was simply a fish.

For another five minutes, she saw nothing at the bottom of the pond.

And then she saw it.

A rock, formed in the shape of a square.

Like a large brick.

She shined her flashlight around her, and she realized that she was surrounded by the ruins of a fallen city. A fallen, underwater, city.

She began to explore the ruins, examining the intricate designs carved into the stone. They resembled the Mayan carvings in Mexico.

That's when it attacked.

I apologize for how short and seemingly boring this story is. I am currently working on a book, which I hope to one day be published, and so I had to rush ARIA so I could continue writing my book and not totally forget about it.
So, again, sorry!

Also, I left it on that cliff-hanger just because I didn't really feel like writing a death scene, I was still a little upset over killing off a character in my book ♥

Dang, this story kind of reminds me of my Peridot XJ9 Origins blog, but with more detail on the transformation part to make it sound like a terrible experience to go through. I mean, the leg fusing thing during the mermaid transformation part just sends a chill down my spine every time! Well done, Intelligent Moron! You get the first place trophy! 10/10, would read again! :3

Oh, and by the way, this kind of reminds me of a tale where anybody (mostly children) who fell off the rainbow bridge, accident or not, was transformed into a dolphin when they touched the water. It kind of explains why most dolphins act like children sometimes, because they were children.
