Hey everyone! Walster here! I've been an owner on many servers and visited many servers in my lifetime. During that time, I've often noticed that the owner can sometimes be the complete opposite of what a good server owner is supposed to be. I've even seen one server owner slapping players around until they vote, not very good for the server's image is it?
Enough with the rant, lets get onto the good stuff!
Rule Number 1. The Players
You must be patient, kind with players, and must be prepared to spend a lot of time each day working on/fixing your server. However, don't get too involved with what players are doing as that will slow you down with doing other server tasks!
Rule Number 2. The Staff
Hire good staff members! This is one of the most important things you will ever do as an owner and must do it right the first time (I've learnt from that myself!) otherwise problems will arise in the future. I highly suggest, if you get enough people onto your community daily, to look at the characteristics of the players you have online - perhaps get into a skype call or some other form of communication to see how old and mature they are. That brings me onto the next rule.
Rule Number 3. Age and Maturity
Age and Maturity! They are possibly the two most common factors that people mess up on when choosing staff. I recommend choosing staff over 18 (but mature and sensible, not the silly type as most people are at that age) for admin. For moderators, depending on their maturity levels, I'd recommend about 15+ because people that age tend to be maturing and becoming more sensible. Use skype or some other form of communication to see whether they're making true the age promise. Its very easy to tell a 12-year-olds voice from a 15-year-olds!!!
Rule Number 4. Staff Meetings
Hold staff meetings either using skype, ventrilo, teamspeak or some other form of voice communication. It's as if you're all sitting around a table discussing ideas the way you would in a real business. It would be good to hold a staff meeting weekly to gather new ideas from the staff and to generally keep active with them.
Rule Number 5. A good server Owner is...
It takes a lot to be a good server owner, if you are looking at becoming one and you aren't at the minimum age limit I've specified for staff, please don't. I've seen many servers with a young owner that fail after being up only 3 months. All the players leave, and the owner has wasted their money. I recommend being at least 14-15 before seriously starting to think about being a server owner. Maybe try out for staff positions on other servers to see whether you would function much better as an admin or moderator than as an owner.
Rule Number 6. Fun
Have fun with your community! Remember, being an owner doesn't always have to mean not joining in with special events or happenings on the server. You could even sometimes do crazy things in the spawn, just make sure that players getting involved in it is voluntary, otherwise you may lose players!

You have really good points. I liked your Staff Meeting idea.

10-20 dollars isn't that bad.
It's definitely a lot hard than it looks, I've worked for 4 years on Minecraft servers and had many late nights and no sleep because of it...good server owners are rarely appreciated.
I am considering starting up a new server that will be much better than my old one. I already have good staff ideas.
Its very hard finding good staff members these days, also, planetminecraft has a bad name for getting bad players to join your server. Generally the sort that go "i want stff, can i be staff plz?" and when you deny them they leave.
