Alstom Traxx (previously marketed as Bombardier TRAXX until 2021) is a modular locomotive platform designed for mainline diesel-electric and electric traction. Originally developed by Bombardier Transportation, the product line was later taken over by Alstom, and includes both freight and passenger variants.
The platform debuted in 2000 with a dual-voltage AC model built for German railways. Over time, the series expanded to include DC versions and versatile multi-system locomotives capable of operating under all four major European electrification systems. In 2006, the Traxx family further evolved with the introduction of diesel-powered models.
All Traxx locomotives share key design elements:
– Steel bodyshells
– Two bogies with two powered axles each
– Three-phase asynchronous induction motors
– Roof-mounted cooling exhausts
– Disc brakes on all wheels
The TRAXX brand name—an acronym for Transnational Railway Applications with eXtreme fleXibility—was officially introduced in 2003. Following Alstom’s acquisition of Bombardier Transportation in January 2021, trademark rights transferred to Alstom. By mid-2023, Alstom had adopted the Traxx name for its entire locomotive lineup, phasing out the previous Prima brand. At the same time, communication practices shifted to the journalistic capitalization "Traxx," with new sub-brands registered.
Traxx locomotives were initially developed for German railways, but they have since been supplied to multiple countries, including France, Switzerland, Sweden, Norway, Italy, Belgium, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Poland, Spain, Hungary, Israel, and South Africa.
Development and engineering took place at Bombardier sites in Mannheim (Germany), Zürich Oerlikon (Switzerland), and Vado Ligure (Italy). Final assembly is carried out at production facilities in Kassel (Germany) and Vado Ligure (for DC variants only).
