Player: "Can I apply for admin?"

Me: "We don't need any more admins, sorry"

Player: "But I'm mature I know how to do stuff"

Me: "We don't need any more staff."

Player: "This server sucks"

Player left the game.

It seems like this happens way too often doesn't it? I mean, you join a server that obviously needs help, and they won't make you staff?! What's wrong with them, you'd obviously be a big help! Well, that's what we're here to discuss today. They do have a reason for denying you, and it might not be what you think. Here are five reasons you may not be getting accepted!

(1) Servers need more players than staff
This one seems obvious, but a lot of player's don't understand. The player to staff ratio is important. If there is too many staff members, players will feel overwhelmingly paranoid and watched. It's also not good for the server is everyone is staff because it doesn't give a very professional feeling to the server. On the other hand, too little staff and players are free to roam around doing whatever they want without moderation. Most owners know the player to staff ratio they would like for their server, and aim to keep it around there.

(2) You aren't as mature as you think you are
About 90% of the players on my server who claim to be mature enough for staff aren't. Using correct grammar and punctuation isn't maturity, neither is being boring. Maturity is knowing how to deal with situations and knowing how to act around certain people. You can have horrible grammar and spelling yet be mature, and vise versa: Correct punctuation and grammar, but extremely boring or not mature.

(3) You need help on everything
Not knowing how to do something is fine. But asking for help can sometimes not be. Of course, everyone needs help occasionally, but if you're asking for other people to walk you through how to install a resource pack, or wandering out loud if anyone can help you create a server, it gives off the vibe that you're not very smart. It's good for your brain to figure things out yourself, and if you're asking for assistance in everything, you just seem helpless. Staff members need to be confident and need to deal with situations on their own in case someone else is not there. This is a very important attribute I personally look for in choosing staff.

(4) You can't handle it
This is a simple one. Many players just can't handle being staff. They break down and start trolling, or they just don't care and let players do whatever they want. Or the opposite, they try too hard and end up punishing, muting, banning, or kicking players for unimportant or illogical reasons in an attempt to act like a good staff member. You need to be able to handle the responsibility of managing and running a server.

(5) You don't know what you're doing
So, many players are mature, and sometimes we do need more staff. But this last little reason here can be a deal-breaker to what seems to be a great opportunity to add a staff member to the team. This may be similar to number 3, but I felt that it's important enough to make another bullet anyway. If you're constantly messing around with worldedit, always messing up, or always trying to explain things you know nothing about, this immediately sends some red flags the owner's way. I've had many-a-player come on, not knowing worldedit, attempt to do things, and end up crashing the server. I've denied them being staff just for that reason. (This doesn't apply only to worldedit, it's about commands, people, technology, etc..) In short, if you don't know what you're doing, admit it or figure it out, don't pretend.

Well, that's it! There are five reasons you may not be as good a staff member as you think you would be. Make sure to consider all of these if you're applying for staff, and if you're an owner, make sure to compare players with your own mini-list to see how they stack up against your requirements! Thank you for reading, and I hope you all learned something from this!

I don't know how to end this, so here's a spoiler.

This is so true. I've had so many players on servers of mine ask for staff, and it's a pain to explain to them why they can't be on staff.
