Hello out there! Recently I have asked the Team what building tips and suggestions they would give to you guys to make your builds better, either for applying to join the Team or just in general, so if you are a fan of Team Vareide and/or want to know how to become a skilled builder you are in the right place!

*I have highlighted the most important sections of each point in bold italics for those of you who do not feel like reading all the text! Names are linked to their Twitter, PMC or youtube accounts if you want to check out anyone mentioned below*

Moofy (Team Vareide Builder):
  • Building in un-equal numbers usually gives the best result in my opinion, can make roofs easier and good looking and roofs usually stand out, I start by counting 3 for every block placement when I build the foundation for my structure. Houses, castles or anything really. You just need to mess a bit around with it!

  • Also use stairs and slabs for your advantage, they give great detail for depth feel and roofing, they can also be placed on ground along a wall to make it look "stabilised" maybe? It's just the feel of use from person to person, it's a tip many people know of but many people don't at the same time.

TheEyeNeedsMore (Team Vareide Recruiter):
  • It's better to create something new, than trying to perfect the overused ideas of others; What I'm basically saying is that you can impress someone more easily by making something completely new, than trying to make the "BEST" version of something that already exists.
  • When it comes to detail, you have to be careful. There is nothing wrong with adding too much detail, but don't add it in areas where it is not needed. Detail gives the player/person a focus point, like parts of the building/area you want the player to focus on or look at. If you don't know how to add detail to a certain area, it's best not to force the detail it into it. The last thing to remember: Detail can come in any shape/size, it depends completely on what you make.
  • One of the most problematic thing in every big project is TIME. When starting a project, make sure you have enough time to work on it. A lot of people start to loose their motivation after working on projects for too long, eventually quitting before actually finishing it. The best thing to help with this issue is decent planning, so take your time to draw a concept of what you want to make, before actually starting with the building. If you draw up these plans/concepts, the chances are less for making mistakes; This should help with both quality and efficiency of any project. Keep in mind that bad planning can affect your project in a bad way, rather than good.

Due62 (Team Vareide Builder):
  • Plan your builds... when you plan your builds they turn out better.

StCamel (Team Vareide Builder):
  • Look at Kupo's tips on colors. She is describing what feeling every color gives and when you should use it. Very useful to make simple things look really nice.

Aelic (Team Vareide Builder):
  • My recommendation is to build something, then tear it down, build it up, then tear it down and then build it up again. Do this until your happy with the build and someone like Block_Fortress thinks your build is amazing. If its not the best its not worth building.

xEargasm (Team Vareide Recruiter):

  • Take time, add detail, Look on the internet for inspiration, don't rush it, use different blocks, make it unsymmetrical (lots of buildings are symmetric so its nice to see it different), try to build organix.

Shadow_Darok (Team Vareide Builder):
  • Start thinking about a theme while you build and the personality of who will live and use the building, for example say I wanted to think about something underwater from there think of a personality If he were to be angry it'd be some sort of Dark themed castle or if he were happy I'd put Ice and white.

Galastrato (Team Vareide Builder):
  • Build in stages. First I think of an idea and build it in my mind. Then I make an outline (be that spaceship or stadium). Then I create walls, ceilings, floors, connecting all the outline lines created before. At this point I get the very simple version of the future building. That's when skill comes in, I destroy some of the blocks replacing with ones that have matching/contrasting colors, to make the build look more than a wood box, after that I go over the list of blocks using almost every one of them on my build to see what kind of nice patterns can be created, for example I take stairs and create some nice angles, handles, and roof points, then I take slabs and some depth to entrances and walls, after that I might take some bright brick contrasting to the theme of the whole build to carve in some ornaments,

Sidera (Team Vareide Admin):
  • Look for inspiration in others builds, check out great builders on PMC/Youtube like Lynchyinc, Minecrafted, Block_Fortress,or whoever your favorite builder is, think about why you like them and how they make those parts you like and try and recreate some of those ideas in your own builds. Remember not to copy other peoples builds, just use them to gain your own vision and ideas.
  • Watch tutorials. Look out for some good building tutorials on youtube, some good ones are MCKupo, YogscastSjin, Gazamo and Keralis. They all build in completely different styles so watching a variety of their videos can give you a huge amount of inspiration and tips for a wide range of building styles!
  • Be honest with yourself. If you build looks good praise yourself and think about what makes it good but also if your build looks bad think about what makes it bad. By analyzing what you have done in your builds you can see what you need to work on and what you do well so you can do even better next time.

  • Build something you will enjoy building. You are unlikely to build something amazing if you are building something you really don't feel like building and you are more likely to feel inspired if you are building something you love.

  • If you are feeling uninspired come back later. If you have been building for ages on one build and you still don't like how it is turning out, have a break come back to it later, play another game or just try and build something else you will only end up feeling rubbishy and like you are enjoying building less and less and its always better to come back with a fresh point of view on your own build.
  • Ask others for their opinions. Sometimes others can point out things you don't see at first, be it constructive criticism or something they think is working really well. Make sure you ask them to be honest, although being told your builds are amazing all the time can make you feel great you can't grow as a builder unless you know how to improve your builds.

So do you also teach good builders to become better, or is TV mostly a place where excellent builders work together?

Mainly a place where everyone works together, but people are happy to teach each other if someone asks. Its just a generally supportive community :)
