#3: Mojang just made name changes available. You can change your name here: https://account.mojang.com/me. This name will be displayed to other players in the game.
If you change your name now you have to wait 30 days before you can change it again, so choose wisely!

#2: Username changes are now officially announced. It will be made available on February 4th. Mojang cleared some facts too. You can change your name every 30 days. Changed names get available for others after 37 days. Names stay unique. So you can't name yourself Dinnerbone. Bans and stuff of this nature are based on player (not name) through UUID. And all that is free, costless!

You'll be able to change your name on the Mojang account page. Once the feature is made available you’ll see a “change” link next to your Minecraft name.

#1: Are Minecraft name changes on the horizon? It certainly seems so, according to Kris Jelbring of Mojang! That might also apply to other Mojang-accounts like "Scrolls". No date was offered on the service though a teaser image was released showing how it might work.

Being able to change one's name in Minecraft has been hinted at for quiet a long time now though the logistics of how it would be handled have been a hot topic of debate. How would bans be handled? How would anyone know if another player had a
new name?

That could not only mean work for the people of Mojang, but also for server owners and developers. Then again, being able to change one's name - in the case of picking a bad one, or believing the name was temporary when buying Minecraft - has been a highly sought-after feature for some time. If you could change your name, what would it be?

I think bans would go off of the players ID. When you go into a self-hosted server console, and join the server, you will see your account's UUID or something like that. It also shows your IP, and your name. If servers format was set to where if a player is banned, their ID was banned, (associated with Mojang account) so if they ban my username for example, Tyler102001, and I change it to TheIronBlock it would simply recognize my UUID and i would still be banned.

I know that when you're using whitelisting on a server, the actual file of whitelisted accounts contains the user's uuid, which is a thirty-six-character-long string consisting of letters, numbers, and hyphens. My assumption (yes, I know, assumptions are dangerous) would be that your uuid would be with you for life, even if you could change your username. This would certainly make banning and whitelisting more manageable.

Uh-huh, that sounds logical. Will be interesting to see it.
