The storm was quite severe. The wind howled angrily, and the frost bit hard. This was no place for a little puppy. But I guess I was the exception.

I had no idea where I was. I could see nothing but flurries of white for as far as the eye could see. It was night, I knew that much, but the flurry of ice and freezing rain was too thick to even see the light of the moon. Where was I to go? Away, I told myself. That’s where they had wanted me to go anyway. I trudged on, still unsure of which direction I was headed, wandering aimlessly for what seemed like an eternity.

I was so cold. My body was shivering uncontrollably. I couldn’t even feel the pads of my paws anymore; they were frozen solid. My thick coat was failing me. I knew I couldn’t take much more, so decided to admit defeat and let fate take over. I laid down on the icy terrain, and putting my head between my paws, I began to cry. I was too young to die. Why did they leave me here? Did I do something wrong? Was I not good enough? These questions only made me wail louder, my whimpers becoming only slightly more audible over the swirling gusts of the storm. It didn’t matter though. No one was coming for me. Nobody wanted me. However, fate would prove me very wrong that night.

I could feel my entire body going numb when it happened. Through blurry eyes, I could see a light walking towards me out from the flurry. Is this it? I thought. Has the light come to claim me? In a sense, it was, but not to take me to heaven. I heard a shout.

“Oh God,” a voice gasped, “the poor thing! Oh God, please don’t be dead.” I was too cold to answer it, but I could twitch my ear. It seemed to relax the stranger from what I could tell.Oh thank God,” the stranger sighed. “I need to get you out of here.” There was no point in protesting; my body was still in shock from the chilling weather. The man scooped me up in his arms and held me close. I felt my limbs relax and huddle closer to the stranger. It wasn’t as chilly there. Was he…? Was he trying to shield me from the cold? Before I could try and answer this, I heard a car door open.

“C’mon, in ya go,” the man said, placing me securely onto the seat. He then anxiously fumbled with some buttons in front of me, and soon a blast of warm air rushed over me. I still shivered from the cold, but this stranger was unwilling to let me freeze. He pulled a blanket from his trunk and wrapped it around me. It was so soft and warm that I started to feel sleepy, and before I knew it, I was in a deep snooze. I felt safe now, safe with a human who cared. But little did I know, my time with this man would be short. Later that week, I found my human pacing in the hallway with a concerned look on his face.

“You think you can take her?” he asked nervously. “I don’t want her out in the cold again. She’s just a puppy.” My tail went between my legs instantly. My old fears came back to me in a terrifying rush. He was going to abandon me, just like them. I was just a puppy to him, not a friend. The man must have seen I was shaking again, as he hastily hung up the phone and knelt down next to me. “Easy there girl, there’s no need to be scared. My friends can take care of you, I know they can.” Despite my trust in him, I was doubtful. He was the only one to show me kindness in my life, and now he was giving me away.

The day finally came when my new owners would adopt me. When I heard the front door open, I quivered with anxiety as I waited for them to turn the corner into the hallway. A woman greeted me first, followed by a man I assumed to be her boyfriend. As she laid her eyes on me, she gasped in amazement, calling me cute repeatedly. Then, out of nowhere, she lifted me off the ground and held me to her chest, gently patting my head as her boyfriend scratched behind my ears.

“They’re going to love her at Christmas.” The woman smiled. Christmas. I had heard that word before. My old owner used it before, calling me a gift for it. I thought on that for a long time. Was it good? Was it bad? But before I could reach an answer, it finally came.

Even though my owner had given me what she called a “spiffy new collar” with a bow on it, I didn’t feel prepared. What was this Christmas thing? My owners seemed excited, talking about family members and some delicious treats like cookies and streusel. They wondered what presents they would get and if their family members would like their gifts. I still felt nervous, tugging back on my leash, unwilling to go inside. So once again, the woman scooped me up and brought me inside. What I saw was beyond anything I could ever dreamed of.

There were so many people smiling, laughing with one another and whispering about gifts. The young ones were running around in impatience, just waiting to open their presents. The lights too, were so bright and pretty, particularly from a tree decked with all sorts of decorations and strings of sparkling lights. However, as my owner set me on the floor, everyone fell silent and stared in my direction. I decided to look for a hiding place.

My attempt failed as the young ones chased after me, crowding around me and reaching their hands to pet me. A young girl finally got to me, gently running her hand through my fur, complimenting on my cuteness the entire time. Next, a young boy came to give me a good scratch behind the ear, getting rid of the little itch from the collar. Before I knew it, I had come out of my hiding spot, basking in all the attention. This was the Christmas they were talking about. A time of happiness in the family where everyone shows how happy they are to have one another. It was then I decided that Christmas was my favorite holiday and that this was my favorite family.

Even though I’m big now, everyone’s excited when I come over. They all chase me and give me a scratch behind the ears. They allow me to play with the other dogs (though some are a bit less cheery than others). The kids even still slip scraps from the table to give me when the parents aren’t looking. And with a family like this one, I cannot ask for anything better.
