Hello everybody, I am the Platydroid, and I am a builder here on PMC. I do a wide variety of builds, from individual to team, and of many different genres and styles. However, although I see myself as a successful builder, there has always been one obstacle in my way ever since I began to play this game: colors. Like 8% of the male population, I have a degree of colorblindness. Fortunately, I still retain the ability to distinguish most colors, but most people don't understand what colorblindness really does and how this affects the ability for those with CB to play the game.

So, what is colorblindness? What does it do?

Colorblindness is a genetic defect in which a person's eyes do not develop properly, resulting in less of an ability to distinguish between colors. To get technical about it, the gene is recessive, meaning that your mother can be a carrier of the gene and not be colorblind, but her son has a 50% chance of having it.

(If you are curious if you have this or not, there are many online tests for determining colorblindness)

While normal visioned people can see up to 1mil hues, a person with medium-intensity colorblindness may only see 5% of those colors. This is a pretty huge deal, as it means that we cannot distinguish well between some hues. The specific colors affected varies per person. What colorblindness (usually) is NOT is a complete lack of color coordination or even a lack of color vision. We do not (usually) see in black and white, except under extremely rare circumstances.

How does this affect players?

I personally can only see about 1% of all hues due to a strong colorblindness. I can barely distinguish between reds and browns, between blues and purples, and between greens and yellows. Because of this, I have a much more limited ability to use blocks in game. Colorblindness makes it more difficult for me to see how well blocks will fit together, however it does not prevent me from doing so at all.

In fact, the MC community and game makes the design process EASIER for people with colorblindness. Blocks are labeled and textured to allow for better abilities build, and multiplayer experience allows for cooperation and understanding in this area.

Although colorblindness alters the way some people see the world, this isn't necessarily a bad thing at all. It simply means that people like me see the world in a unique perspective. I hope from this article you have learned something more about colorblindness and how it affects those in this game who have it.

Yes, I am aware of EnChroma. From the reviews I have seen, they woud work for me, but they are VERY expensive, and they don't work well with screens, more with well-lighted real life settings. However, I am looking into getting some in the future with insurance, so who knows. Maybe someday I will see "normally" :)

This was a well put together article, and was quite informative on the subject at hand rather than getting off topic easily, like I tend to do a lot. You deserve a diamond!

Very helpful to others who might not be colorblind, or know someone who is (Personally, I am not, but one of my friends can't see the color blue, it winds up a more purple-green color. The only example I can give is that while the sky may be light blue to me, to them it's a seafoam green.). It doesn't affect gameplay for anyone, but the labels I know do help them with the wool blocks.

Anyway, great article. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for your feedback. Personally I have difficulties with colors mainly because I do a lot related to art.

Very well written blog! It's good that you're raising awareness for a condition that most people wouldn't think of often, and also for showing that it's not necessarily a disability.

Also, congratulations on making the popular blog list!
