Creating a Server: The Basics

When creating a server, you must know your goals. For example, do you want the server to become popular or do you want to keep it small and personal. This tutorial will go over the server creation process, day by day. It will help you choose what type of server you want , what plugins you should get, how to "create" the server, and what hosting method you should pick. PLEASE NOTE: This may go in to video format later.

Step 1. Picking a Hosting Method:
There are TWO different ways you can host a server. You can A) Host it on your own "machine" or B) Pay somebody else to host it. Personally, I have done both methods. Option A is more laid back, simpler, and cost effective, while Option B, is slightly more professional and won't kill your system. Before you will be the Pros and Cons of both methods; if I have forgot one, please post it in the comments.

Hosting it on your own Machine:
Pros:
1. Cost-effective
2. You have easier access to console and files
3. Similar to 2, it's much easier to upload and delete large files
4. It is much easier to upgrade your own system compared to paying an extra monthly fee for an upgrade
5. HARDDRIVE SPACE. I simply can't emphasize this enough. Usually, PCs will have at least 1tb of harddrive space, compared to a hosting service providing 10gbs. If you run out of "space" for your server, the map will become corrupted
6. Generally, you have access to more RAM
Cons:
1. All hardware has a lifespan. Therefore, if you leave your server on 24/7, your leaving your PC on 24/7, slowly contributing to its "death".
2. Depending on your system and the size of your server, you might not want to use your PC often, because you want to dedicate most of its resources to the server
3. The electricity bill. Depending on the efficiency of your PSU, or Power Supply, your electricity bill might rise. For some, you may not care, for others, you may.
4. It's less professional physically and mentally. Most likely, your computer will not have commercial grade components, such as Xeon processors found in most servers.
Conclusion: Hosting your server on your own machine is a more relaxed and casual method. It may be a contributing factor in the death of your machine, but it's easier and simpler to do. In addition, it is mostly free!

Paying a Company to Host:
Pros:
1. Higher grade components. Usually, a company will have commercial, server components, such as Xeon processors, previously mentioned, and much, much more.
2. The components in these servers are not yours. You can leave your server on 24/7, without any fear or worry.
3. Most provide TECHNICAL SUPPORT. I rarely use this feature, but for new server owners, this is a great tool. If an issue arises, they may be able to fix it.
4. Some server hosters have "perks". For example, beastnode, the server hoster I use, gives you Enjiin advanced for a month and some other useless things.
5. It's more professional and you can "brag" about it. Many servers I see, say, "Premium Hosted" in their description.
6. Most server providers, provide some type of database. This database allows for easier, less consuming storage for plugins.
7. They're more reliable.
Cons:
1. It's always more expensive! Compared to hosting it on your own machine, this method is far more expensive. In addition, if you want an upgrade, it will add on to your monthly fee.
2.HARDDRIVE SPACE! You get far less harddrive space compared to hosting it on your own machine. If you run out of this limited harddrive space your world will get corrupted and much, much more.
3.It's harder to access the console and the files, even using an FTP transfer program such as filezilla. It takes about 10x longer to delete files and upload files, overall being extremely annoying.
4.Sometimes, your server may go down because the hoster has gone down. This has happened to me a few times, but this is an oddity.
Conclusion: Paying somebody to host your server is expensive, but is more professional. It is a more reliable service, providing commercial grade components for cheap. Even with these commercial components and a database, harddrive space is always a fear. If you want your server to become large and professional, this is the way to go!

Picking a hoster is a long process. You will want somebody reliable who meets your budget. If you have a favorite server, ask who hosts it. Furthermore, this website may help you make your decision: http://www.bestminecrafthosts.com/category/approved/
