Hello there everybody! Welcome to Part 2 of my Zombie Apocalypse series, Dead on the Rise! I know I've been gone for some time (To the dismay of some and relief of others), but I'm happy to say that I'm on summer break now, and will have plenty of time to update this series, and possibly work on a few more Worldpainter maps while I'm at it. So, without further ado, I bring you:

Dead on the Rise o Part 2

* * *

o We shouldno t have left her,o Maria blurted through her sobs. o She could have been okay, we could have helped hero ¦o

o You know we couldno t take that chance, Mari.o Sara said as softly as she could. The choice hadno t been easy, leaving Stacee behind. She was Mariao s best friend, and almost as much a daughter to Sara as Mari was. But some things had to be done, no matter how hard it was to do it. o All we know about theseo ¦these things, are that they infect others through bite wounds, and Stacee got bit. There wasno t anything we could do for her.o

o You dono t know that!o Maria muttered harshly. o This is your fault anyways. If you hadno t tried to fill up on gas when we knew there might be zombies around, we wouldno t have gotten attacked, and Stacee wouldno t have been bit!o She concluded her sentence with another wail of agony.

o Io m sorry, Maria. I know we should have tried to find a less dangerous gas station. But as it is, we might not make it much further. If we hadno t filled up the tank when we did, we might not have made it to another station before running out of gas. I did what I thought was best.o Sara could feel her daughtero s cold glare fixated on her. She knew Maria was hurting, and the only person to blame was her. Perhaps she should have gone a bit further, and maybe there would be three in the car now instead of two.

Sarao s attention flickered between the road ahead and the needle on the fuel gauge, which was now almost lined up with the quarter-tank line. The two of them were a few hours outside of Las Cruces, New Mexico, where they would look to fill up the tank once more and begin their drive North to Saraho s Sister-in-Lawo s vacation home near Santa Fe. That is, if they were lucky enough to avoid the lifeless monsters that plagued the earth.

The hum of tires on pavement mingled with the sounds of Mariao s heavy, broken sobs, and Sara was slowly lulled into a trance. Her mind was full of thoughts and doubts as she watched the road fly underneath the wheels of her maroon Saturn Ion. The sun was starting to set, the sky turning different hues of pink and violet, with a rich orange blanketing the horizon. Maria had stopped crying, but stared forward with a stony gaze. The tension was unbearable. Sara decided she would try consoling her daughter once more.

o Maria, Io m sorry. I trulyo o

o No, I don't want to hear it, mom.o Maria cut in, her voice rough from crying. o We could have done something. Anything! But now, my best friend is out there alone, facing God-knows-what while she dies. Who knows? Maybe sheo s already dead! We should have helped her somehow. Even if we could have just stayed with her until she was goneo ¦o Mariao s voice trailed off.

Sara didno t know how to respond to that. I know we couldno t have stopped, but could we have just kept her with us until she passed? Sara began questioning herself, doubting if she was making the right choices at a time where it mattered most. Distracted by her thoughts, she barely had time to swerve out of the way of the figure in the road before them.
