In this world, you must gather materials quickly and have a safe place to live.
but to do so, you must mine, and mine, and mine, over and over. iron, gold, diamonds, these materials exist plentiful deep in the earth, but, sometimes it's a bit dangerous to get what you need.

you plow through caverns, mineshafts, dungeons, temples, and ransack villages. sometimes the most dangerous monster is those that are like yourself, other adventurers.

But an idea popped into my head, why Build a home that is easy to destroy and steal from when... you can hide it, while also gathering what you need, at the same time?

This idea sparked a challenge for myself, to never built a house, exposed, ever again.

if people could see where I live, surely they will have curiosity to explore inside it, and if they see something of value, they will steal it.

so, what's a thing people will most likely ignore? not a house, but a Well.

usually, a well is made to expose and obtain water, a precious resource to the surface. but in this world, usually... wells are just for decoration, for there is so much water everywhere.
that being said, what if.... Wells can still be used for something? Wells can still be a source of precious material?
What if, wells were a source.... of living? A home in itself. A personal dungeon of safety and wealth.

that was my idea, that was my spark. so. I began to gather what I needed. Wood, wool, tools, food, plants, water, and iron. it was so easy. Now that I have what i needed to preserve myself in my next endeavour, it was time to find the location I could stay in. No matter where you go, if for some reason you had to go back to the surface, you should think "What is my only priority in the surface world?"
it's trees, you need wood constantly and quickly. you wouldn't think so but it's easy to run out very very quickly, faster than eating. faster than you can grow a single tree underground.

imagine this, Pretend the world above will soon be filled scorched by the sun, in less than a week, for exactly one day, all plants will burn, all animals will die, all structures will collapse into dust, your only safety is underground.
that... is another inspiration.
but, heh, that won't happen.. unless you open a forbidden box, but enough about that.

I'm here to tell you my story, and to teach you how I did what I did. it's super simple.

Dwell Well 2-torial: the 1.9 experience.

The 1st thing I did, was dig, and I dug, and while I dug, I made ladders. and I mined, and while I mined I made tools, I did this, layer by layer, in a 2x2 box, until I hit what is know as Layer 7. the layer above bedrock, where all your materials of preciousness grows. coal, iron, gold, lapis, diamonds, sometimes emeralds, even the Ruby glow of redstone. all exist here, in your earth, at this layer.

that being said, don't start yet, you need a Main room, the beginning of the Well, the source of the source and a place of rest.

Dwell Well 2-torial: the 1.9 experience.
when I did this, I was.. .a little excited, I wanted to put a little effort this time, make it pretty, just to show you guys. The best thing to do is make a 10x10 room. whether you want to decorate the wall is up to you, but I heard people though clay brick walls were ugly, and I thought, nah, I can use them. So, I did that, but I needed furnaces, and I wanted this over quickly., anyways, i prepared what i needed, did what i ded, and i have my beginning.

next, it's time to start the Shaft.
Dwell Well 2-torial: the 1.9 experience.
I had so much cobble I decorated my walls with furnaces, but enough about that, it was a bad idea later on but whatever. here is what I did:

at the center of a wall, make a 4 wide hole, now keep digging out that hole. that is the shaft, you will keep going exactly that direction until you need to turn. Now, for lighting, every 6th wall block is where you will use your Stone type blocks that you gathered, andesite, diorite, and granite, you will smooth these out and use them as columns , and on top of these columns will be a torch. listen, there must always be a 4 wide gap between each column, this way you can SAVE and not have torches every which where ever like a childish mess.

what I did next is where you will have your farms.

on one side, I have my food. under that wall is a line of water to moisturize my plots,
each line of plot has a different crop. wheat, carrots, potatoes, and beet.

if you desire, and have them, you can also make a plot for pumpkins, and watermelons, but I only have the seeds for them and I didn't care at the time to make plots for them, but i still have them just in case, and so should you. if you want, you can line the walls with cocoa, or expose the water sources for Sugarcane. you can have a line of soulsand for warts, and other stuff you desire. it's whatever, this is your home and you can expand it endlessly by simply mining out the areas.

As a little experiment, I was curious, can my.. style of mining make an area for a tree to grow? and so I tried, but this was the only tree that ever grew, and so, I guess you should do whatever you want with your tree area, if you even want a tree area.

now then, lets go a little deeper.

when everything you need is done and finished, and you killed the black beast of the finale dimension, you can gather the last source of fruit, the Chorus flowers, and bring them back here, to be grown over and over... that is, if you actually understand how they work.
and here is my own little area.

now, one more time, a little deeper.

After a while I just.. outright got tired of putting furnaces in the walls, and dug straight until I hit a lava wall.... well.. actually I made that lava wall myself, but I digress.

as long as you always have a 4 wide wall, you can always chose to change direction and mine that way, this way, you can also have multiple people live in a single well, making it bigger and bigger, from all directions.
that is, if your friends even care to follow your rules and designs. sigh...

now here are things I would like to address.

Lava is NOT A PROBLEM

if you accidently hit a block that held lava behind it, quickly mine the block below where the lava would go, to prevent it from spreading.
Not only that,  but with an Iron Bucket, you now have LONG LASTING FREE FUEL!!! Now you can stop wasting your coal. isn't that great?

what's this? you hit a water block and accidentally flooded your well, entirely ironic?
well, whatever, easy fix, it's just water, right? you can seal it up and go a different direction or start a new farm area there. there's no problems down there.

now that everything is set, your home is ready to do what you wanted it to do, protect you. protect your precious resources as it expands, and keep that cash flow coming.

This is your Well, this is where you Dwell, and if things are fine, everything will be swell.

That is my story, that is my lesson, what you do with it is up to you. Have fun and have a well crafting experience.

well. any questions?
